HE detergent is best value for amount you get.
Produces very low suds and it comes in liquid or powder.

I've used the kirkland dishwasher powder that comes in the bucket. I gave away the second half. It didn't clean well for my dishwasher. I have good success with the cascade powerball tablets. They go on sale at cosco sometimes.

HE detergent seems as good as Tide (the only other HE I've ever used), no problem. As for dishwasher stuff, I had the liquid (comes in two large bottles) and a service type I had out told me that unless you can use the things up quickly they aren't very good. Apparently, the surfactants or whatever separate over time which means it won't clean very well. Given the quantity you have to buy, that means you may have one bottle going bad on you before you get around to using it. So you lose what you saved by buying in quantity.
Meanwhile, most Kirkland products are pretty good and worth trying. Costco does a good job of offering some real value in that line. As well, their return policy can't be beat so no harm in trying new things.
