While the Kodak digital photo frames tend to be better than the cheaper competition, all of these models listed at Dell are using 16:9 LCDs adapted from portable DVD players. That saves money for the manufacturer, but it's not the best aspect ratio for showing 4:3 digital photos.

The wireless WiFi feature on the more expensive Kodak models is also of questionable value. The idea is that they can access photos directly from Kodak's photo sharing site on the internet as well as on your local PC. But it turns out that these units cannot access the internet independently via your wireless router - they must communicate with a local program running on your PC to access Kodak's photo hosting web site. So how is that better than just writing the photos to a memory card?

Widescreen doesn't really bother me but the 7" Kodak frame is quite low res, just like most cheap 7" frames (480 � 234). The 8" is much better at 800x480.

Another thing I found while researching digital picture frames is the fact that the Kodak frames can't seem to a random slideshow and always display slideshows ordered based on the filename. Also, they seem to have a huge surround. The display area of the 7" is 6.1 � 3.4 in but the frame itself is 10.3 � 7.6 in.

My questions on these digital photo frame is that if you leave it on 24/7, how long would it last and how much energy are we wasting on it. It would be a good idea to put it on a timer switch, to have it off middle of the night and during daytime on weekdays, when no one is even around.

I was pretty much ready to buy the 8" Kodak frame until I realized it's size and the fact that it lacked the random playback.

Now I'm looking to buy a 7" (6.5" viewable?) Philips frame but it certainly isn't keeping the costs down. The reason I'm leaning towards the Philips is:

1. High resolution (800x480, 720x480 viewable?)
2. Built-in rechargable battery (doesn't last long but means you can pass it around)
3. Reasonable size frame (8.3 x 6.5 in)
4. Comes with 4 interchangable coloured frames.
5. Good slideshow features including random.
6. Has a timer feature for on/off
7. Has day/night brightness settings (6am-6pm, fixed)

The negative:

1. Cost (I'm having a hard time finding it for less than $229 in Canada though Amazon.com has it for $149 US)
2. 12 MB onboard memory (not as bad as it sounds since it resizes pictures copied to internal memory and it supports a few types of memory cards.)

I can't justify much more than $100 for these things. I think the price will slowly come down also. Kodak's image seemed sharper than most of them to me and while there is not random feature, I'm not willining to pay more or accept less PQ for it.

Seems to be a big jump in price from 7" to 8"-10". I don't see the added value personally. Some people may though, especially in a big room. As I said, I am not really willing to go much over $100.

I would like to get one of these too, but I want at least 10" and they're too expensive right now. I'm suprised they don't all have a random function, that seems like it should be standard.

One more thing.......I notice a lot of these have speakers and mp3 as well as video capability. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have no interest in that. I want a frame I can put up to display pix, nothing else. I'm not looking to replace my tv. Are there any with a slimmer profile that just display pix?

Planning to get Dad one for Father's day to display his grandkids' photos. Another choice is to set up the old PC (P550) and extra 15" LCD. Cost me nothing plus gives them a nice 15" display.

First of all, Thanks OP for the post. I just ran to futureshop, PM and picked up the 8" version. Total comes to $153.98 plus tax.

Love the image quality. It's also very easy to transfer pictures onto it. I use it in my office, it even have a hole to attach a cable lock.

I wouldn't bother the 7" or 10" version, since the pixel size of the 8" version is the smallest, resulting a sharper image. 10" has the same resolution as the 8", but each pixel is bigger. The 7" only has 480x234 resolution, compare to 800x480 in the 8" and 10".

Although the Philips frame has even a small pixel size, 800x480 on a 7", but it is way more expensive compare to this current deal on the Kodak.

Haven't test the mp3 function, and probably not going to. This is my picture frame, not my music player.

Yes, it doesn't run random slideshow, but I can live with it.
