[Koodo] 3GB data for $15/mth, $0 down Alcatel A30, $7 bill credit monthly

Just receivd an email from Koodo about their 3GB data plan for $15 a month

You'll get an Alcatel A30 tablet for $0 with tab small, and Koodo will add a $7 monthly bill credit for 24mths
So basically you only need to pay the $15 everymonth and get a out-dated android tablet for free (might be a good choice to use as GPS?)
And also if you get this plan online through their self-serve page, the $35 connection fee is waived.

Says limited-time offer, restrictions are:
(1) Offer eligible only to Koodo customers with a mobility line.
(2) Taxes and pay-per-use services (such as long distance, roaming, and additional airtime or data) are extra. Calling will be subject to pay-per-use charges at a rate of $1.00 per minute. Texting will be subject to pay-per-use charges at a rate of $1.00 per text.

I'm not sure can I get this offer and put the sim into another device?

The tablet you'll receive (Alcatel A30) is selling for around $100 on Amazon. This is the first time I post something on RedFlagDeals so sorry about any confusion.

Can you add texting/minutes to this somehow without it being pay per use?

You should be able to. There isn't really a "locked sim" in Canada as far as we know.

Most definitely no. Not with the same plan anyway.

Haven't called them to ask about the talk&text add-ons but I'll do that tomorrow.

Actually a year or two ago when I think it was Bell offering a similar deal the SIM WAS locked to the hardware sold with it, data would not connect if you put the SIM in another device.

Not sure about Koodo.

Virgin locks their tablet sims, to work only on their tablets, no less. Not sure if Koodo does the same.

They can't, or they won't? I think Fido can.

so basically the $7 bill credit gives you the tablet for free, but the catch is they lock you into a 2-yr "contract" by virtue of the "free" tablet.

Freedom does, at least with incoming texts, even their 2 factor authentication SMS from their own website won't get through! First hand experience there.

They will bill you for the balance of the tab on the tablet.
