Every Canadian provider is required to unlock devices for free starting December 1, 2017.

Edit: December 1st not 12th Telus gave me the wrong info, thanks @Robkoh

Edit 2: Telud is doing free unlocks now apparently. I'll have to give them a call.

I know, just wanted to give a heads up that some might do it before!

If you have an old locked phone and you are no longer with the original provider, you may not get it unlocked. I chatted with CRTC this morning and I was told that the phone has to be active in the carrier's network to get it unlocked for free. I am not sure whether you have to have active wireless service with the exact carrier or with its related brands (such as Telus/Koodo/PM).

I think it might be a little bit different this time. Before the rep gave you $50 credit to offset the unlocking fee. Now they may probably remove it from the system.

Most likely, NO. At least this is what I have learned from CRTC. I think it is YMMV depending on the carrier.

This shouldn't be an issue, PM have been officially unlocking Koodo and Telus phones for some time, not for free though.

Whether they will make that service free or eliminate it is yet to be known.

Though I find it interesting how come CRTC is saying you must be active on the network. Otherwise it's not quite "all" phones.

Telus (and Koodo/PM) has better services than Rogers and Bell.

So this free unlock policy will be applied to all devices including tablets?

Rogers seems determined to charge until until this date.
No surprise there.
