I just called koodo and they unlocked both an iPhone SE and an LG G5 ( both on tab) for free . Thanks OP

He mentioned that this only works if phones are attached to an existing account

How far in were you with the contact?

But we may request it from Apple directly after December 1?

Is that correct?
No. If they don't unlock all iPhone automatically, you still have to go to the original provider, not Apple.

**UPDATE***

So I'm on QC plan, while being in Alberta, and wanted my iPhone unlocked. I called in and they did it for me without any issue. I was also told that they are no longer charging the fee. So thanks OP =)

??? iPhones lock status is stored on Apple's servers. When you insert a different SIM into your iPhone your phone will phone home and as about it's locked status. This is normal procedure.

There is no reason for an OTA update for iPhones, it's pretty trivial for Apple to simply flag every Canadian registered iPhone as "unlocked", and the phone will be unlocked when you put another SIM in.
You still need to hook it up to iTunes, I believe.
The myth on the Internet is that Canadians are nice people. Those people who say this just haven't been on RFD.

They have been saying this for Years. Once unlocked by your Cell Provider all you need to do is, input another provider's Sim card and that's it. Not sure why they have been saying this BS.
