as someone already said, it's perfectly legal, and usually a union thing if it is "not legal". i don't know why people have the perception that you can't just be terminated (with compensation) at any point during your employment. some places in europe have much stricter labour laws, but here the law is:
a) you are fired with cause (stole money from your company say). you get no severance notice or pay
b) you are terminated "without cause". This means that your company is required to either give you a variable amount of notice, or a variable amount of compensation in lieu of notice.
c) a bunch of other specialized reasons you can be terminated without compensation (like you're a construction worker apparently)
Contract law allows for you to agree to all kinds of things, so your employment contract may add to these basic provisions in the law (ie when you're part of a union), but aside from that there are no other rules. Your company *does not* need to have a business need to terminate your position, they aren't required to be "downsizing" before they can lay people off. It's just one common reason.

I do agree that I did not see eye to eye with my manager. neither did the rest of the team. example: i have a son who is going through autism testing and requires time off since it is with OT, PT, ST and specialists. ST alone is every 2 weeks for 2 hrs. PT is every 6 weeks for 2 hrs. OT is every 6 weeks for 2 hrs. He mentioned to me about my time off and my lack of dedication to towards my work because of this. I gently reminded him that i did book these in advance. i guess it could have been over my dedication to my work if that is what is means.
the bright side: i do get to spend more quality time with my older son who is now officially diagnosed with autism. I got laid off 12 hrs i got the official word that he is moderately-severely autistic.
Sorry to hear about that.. but don't blame your manager.. he is just doing his job.
I was once told by my boss.., "while I do pity him, we have a business to run... "

I agree if you don't meet your targets and your job....but i do believe that if you do exceed your job then there should be some give.
