LCBO Vintages: Clearance on Sofia Mini 'Champagne'
LCBO is clearing their stock of Sofia sparking wine. It is canned, with each pack containing four cans and straws. Each can fills 2 flutes just over halfway (normal pour). Originally sold at $29.95 last fall when it came out, it's now $9.95! That's less than $2.50 a can.
It is made by Niebaum-Coppola Winery - very well-regarded California winery - some of their wines are amazing. This one is very nice. I would say as good as most California or Spanish sparklers, and better than most of the sub-$20 bottle stuff on the shelves. It's a tad sweeter than I prefer, perhaps a 'demi-sec' as opposed to a 'sec'. But at the price, buy a few packs and keep 'em in the fridge. I bought a case (six packs x 4 cans), and will probably pick up a few more for gifts (the packaging is very nice).
Check out http://www.sofiamini.com/site.php for more info on the wine, or www.lcbo.com for stores that still have stock (seems to be carried in stores with Vintages selections only).

Aug 12th, 2005 02:17 PM #4I actually remember doing a market research survey not too long about wine in tetra boxes! So it probably won't be too long before we see it on the shelves!

I was being facetious.
Still in all, the idea of sparkling wine in a can is disturbing.
Thats probably why they're blowing it out a such low prices.
No one was buying into it._______________

At $30, I certainly wouldn't be buying that in a can. For $10, I might. OP, are they in cans or bottles? LCBO is showing that it's $9.95 for 4x187mL bottles.

They are 187mL cans...must be an error on their site.
Yeah, they are clearing these because they didn't sell last Christmas, as was the idea - they bought a lot and introduced them in November. Apparently cans scare people away. From a packaging perspective, though - they don't affect the taste in any way, since the inside of the can has a layer of plastic. Just don't drink it out of the can-pour it in a flute.
