How does this compare to the Dell XPS 13 i7? That's on sale at the Microsoft store.

One of the biggest deal breakers for me for the xps13 is where the camera is located. Something to think about...other than that...they're both great devices

Unless you have already ordered it, the MS Store sale has ended.
The XPS 13 is now $1,799 for the i7 & $1,599 for the i5.

(https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/dell- ... verviewtab)

I am debating the same as I ordered the XPS 13 i7 last Friday (yet to receive it).
On paper, the differences are:
XPS -
Better display - infinity edge 4k touch, processor: i7-8550U (although not by too wide a margin), better design (subjective), smaller footprint, more portable.

X1 Carbon -
Rugged build, 2 SSD slots (easy expansion!), better keyboard, HD non-touch display (pro or con -depending on what you want), better battery life than the 4K XPS, way wider port selection - 2 USB A's, 2 USB C's, Full sized HDMI, also, cheaper by ~$100 from ebates.

However, a thing to note, the ram is soldered on both of them.

If the glass c930 is still on for 1299 that gets you i7 and 12gb of ram. Of course, quite different products in build and features.

I've a 5th gen and it's awesome. Not the fastest, but great build quality and very well made. Mine came from Bauer Systems used, $500. (Not a plug. Mentioned in the spirit of RFD).

There's also a doorbuster deal for the 16/512 version, which includes an upgraded screen (WQHD) and the i7 8650U (slightly higher clock speed than the i7 8550U seen in most other models).

It's substantially more ,though, at $2,036...

That is a barebones X1 Carbon.

Currently waiting for WQHD + 16gb @ $1.5k all in (cyber monday / black friday sale prices)
