- 1 GB (1 DIMM) Ram, ALWAYS GET THE MINIMAL RAM, it's much cheaper to purchase sticks of ram yourself (i.e. FS had/has a sale for 2 GB (1 DIMM) ram for just 34.40), which gets you 3 GB of ram for 34 bucks, whereas to upgrade on the website it costs 105.30.
- Integrated Fingerprint reader (this is for computer geeks, not a necessary upgrade but fun and helpful for people who don't want to enter passwords)
- 160 GB, 5400 rpm harddrive (this is just about the perfect size, not too big and not too small.....also most users won't notice the difference between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm)
- DVD Recordable Ultrabay Slim (DVD burning is a must have for my needs)
- PC Card & Media Slots (I choose this because it's a slot for your sd cards as I don't have any other significant need for the express, express = empty slot if you have other peripherals)
- Bluetooth (Becoming more and more useful these days, however I really thought about whether upgrading or not to this as I don't REALLY need it but I decided to get it just in case as it's something that may be useful in the future and I'd rather not get a dongle just because it's more simple)
- 9 Cell Battery (Longer battery life, although it may stick out that's something I'm willing to sacrifice for 2-3 more hours of usage)

NOT All configs are 10% off! At least not for the X300 & the SL series. Not to mention they jacked up the price of the X61 Tablet from $13XX to $18XX, ~$500 increase. Considering the fact that the new ThinkPads are coming out on August 5, I'm quite disappointed w/ this sale (which ends on Aug 4). For the products that are about to be discontinued/replaced in about 2 weeks, I thought they would give out better deals than these.

Last month, they jacked up the price of the R series from the starting price of $6XX to $7XX.

Also, the current sale prices are still way higher than the March prices.

Thanks anyway OP. Eventhough IMHO, this sale is lame and I see no point to start a new thread. (Well, not that lame but long-time RFDers know what I mean.)

Actually thats wrong, when I config it to the same specs, it comes out 3 dollars cheaper, plus the 10%, which makes it 109 dollars more cheaper.

Lenovo jacking up prices for good reasons. More $$ they charge for their laptop make you think that their laptop are higher quality, better engineered, etc. IF they have their laptop under say $500. Peoples would think that they are getting refurbished item or something had gone totally wrong and would not buy Lenovo brand laptops (Acer come to mind, quality doesn't last very long). So the impression Lenevo trying to say here is that the more you pay is more you get. Jacking up the regular price, give you discount, make you think you had save a more than the product is actually worth (Futureshop and Bestbuy come to mind).

Don't take my word for it just an opinion.

Back to School deals to be out first week of August!

Anyone knows when the NEW models are out. I think it may be a good idea to pay slightly more and get a new models than making expensive upgrades for the older models. For an example they still sell laptops with 1GB RAM and charge you $150 to upgrade it to 4GB

They will not check for Employee ID's as long as you go through the FNDEPP and not IBMEPP.

Also, the picture I have in the original post is outdated, they have new prices.


And to the person above, from past experiences, Lenovo has always been a better laptop in terms of build quality. The laptop seems durable, doesn't have as much wear and tear as other brands (i.e. Dell), and the performance is pretty good as well. Through this EPP link, you're getting a laptop with a T8xxx or T9xxx, if you configure that through Dell you'll see the same prices as well... The reason most laptops you see at the moment are $500-$600, is due to the fact that they either contain a Dual-Core processer (not C2D), and run with either a T5xxx or T6xxx. Now I'm not saying Lenovo is the BEST deal always, but their pretty consistent.

And to poster above above, it tells you the weight based on which selection you pick. Generally speaking, most 14' or 13' laptops will weigh less.

I partially agree with this point. My first laptop was a Thinkpad R32 and I'll tell you right now it was the best notebook I've ever had. I've since tried out DELL, Gateway, and Averatec but all fall short to the Thinkpad in terms of build quality and keyboard responsiveness. I'm also a huge fan of the trackpoint nub... however with that being said, I've had nothing but crappy experiences with Lenovo customer service (like many other RFDers, I've had orders cancelled twice this year due to website pricing errors and Lenovo CS handled both situations very poorly).

Now I am in the market again for another notebook and despite the negative experiences with Lenovo this year, I'm still seriously considering purchasing another Thinkpad (currently eying the T61). Given that, I have devalued the Thinkpad line and would not pay full price for any Lenovo product again if I can't rely on quality service afterwards.

So overall, my position on this topic is that Thinkpads are the best notebook I've ever used however Lenovo customer service is the worst I've ever dealt with (and I think many would share this position as well). And if Lenovo will treat you like crap before you purchase their product, could you realistically expect anything more after they have your money? Think about it... I know I'm still on the fence...

Now I am in the market again for another notebook and despite the negative experiences with Lenovo this year, I'm still seriously considering purchasing another Thinkpad (currently eying the T61). Given that, I have devalued the Thinkpad line and would not pay full price for any Lenovo product again if I can't rely on quality service afterwards.

I just bought a T61 (before July, so I got XP out of box, save 20 bucks for Vista Business), it is a very good laptop but some new design might not be favored by everyone

1. The screen is slightly off-centered, the left side took extra space to accommodate the wireless antenna
2. The keyboard is still good, but the tactile-ness and the feedback is slightly loss compare to T4x (took me a while to get used to it)

Must have upgrades
1. Fingerprint scanner
2. battery (if you get 15.4)
3. hard drive space
4. processor - went up to T8300 from 8100
5. 2Gig+ ram

Optional
1. Upgrade to XP
2. Nvidia video
3. Bluetooth
4. WXGA+
