I'm in the same boat...looking for a single, 2.4 or better for less than $30.
From personal experience, Panasonic seems the best.

LF: good cordless phone
Don't have a lot to spend. 5.8Ghz with single handset should do, but dual handset would be preferred. GE, Panasonic, Uniden VTech, Sanyo - any recommendations?

I bought the Uniden 5.8 3 handset pack from Costco ($130 or so). Has built in answering machine and a wack of functionality. Great sound and battery life. Might be more than you want to spend, but a very good system indeed....

The uniden 5198 has great reviews, I'm thinking of getting one myself. It has a corded base w/ ans. and a 5.8GHz phone. Unfourtuantely ive only seen it in the states, where I plan to buy it. (circuitcity, walmart, amazon.com)
its sells for about 60US

I had GE before, sucks.
Currently using Panasonic, dual handsets with answering machine, 5.8Gz, very happy.
