Its hard getting anything decent thats a Turion/Centrino at $500.Your looking at 30GB, 1.2ghz, 256 ram.
I would go for a Athlon XP.They are almost as good and you can find them cheap.

LF: good quality labtop for about 500
For in-laws (email, web etc). Doesn't have to be a high performer. Any Turion/Centrino would do it.
I'm trying to avoid the Celeron/Sempron though.

Where can I find an athlon for that much?
