LF-lightproof curtains in GTA
Just moved into a condo and need curtains. I prefer the bedroom to be as dark as possible so does anybody have any insight on where I can get lightproof curtains? I was at Market Village and the curtain shop there quoted $600 for my window (approx. 8' x 6'). Is that typical or too much? For those who don't know, these curtains are typical drapes with a vinyl backing so light doesn't pass through. Thanks in advance.

Buy a dark and light coloured fabric for it.. it works the same way doesn't it? One light one and a dark one in the back, prevents most if not all light.

I suggest get one of those white, plastic, thicker material pull down curtains. That rolls up when you pull down on them again. Not sure what the name is.
Install that up top, so when you retract it, its out of the way. Then install normal nice looking curtains infront of it.
With both of them used, your room will be very dark.

We got that material on our bedroom curtains. It was called "black out" lining, and it was a thick vinyl. It is a lining that sits between the curtain face (what you can see) and the cloth back of the curtain which faces the window.
It works great. The curtain is totally opaque to direct morning sun, but the curtain is heavy and doesn't have a nice soft "drape" to it. You can't tell when the curtain is closed, but when it is open and held back, you can see that it is slightly stiffer than normal. It actually isn't that big a deal. Our curtain material is quite heavy anyways so it doesn't matter.
I love it and would recommend it.
I remember that it wasn't cheap, but that is all I remember.
We had our curtains made up by a nice Italian lady working in her home, and the request for this "black out" lining was no big deal. It seemed to be reasonably common.
You don't see the lining at all. The curtain looks normal, from both the room and the window. It is only when you feel it that you can tell something is sandwiched in there.

thanks everybody for your posts. After I made more phone calls, it looks like I can get them cheaper than what I was first quoted. It definitely helps to shop around.

OMG I was looking for the exact same thing! My friend told me a while back that you could get something where on one side it reflects the light.
In some condo buildings they don't allow anything other than "white" to show through the windows. So my method of boarding up the windows with cardboard isn't really allowed (unless you have one side white).
I can't sleep with the bright sun in my face either.

Sears Catalogue has blackout liners (like the ones in hotels) that fit behind pinch pleat drapes. You could probably find them on their website. Sears retail store doesn't carry them.

Drapes like this will cost hundreds. The Roll down shades are the cheapest if you are allowed them. There are several different grades. Go to sears.ca. There are ones that are very thick and will block out all light if you install them properly. This way you can put whatever drapes you want on the inside and change these cheaper drapes as much as you want.
