My order of preference:
Benq 1620 > Nec 3520 > Lg 4163.

Lg 4163 // Nec 3520 // Benq 1620
Each burner has a little something extra to offer than other but LG 4163 has almost all the performance and features as far as I have researched on the net but I would like to have some real world performance feedback from all of you to go ahead with it.
TIA..

I have not listed the drives as my preference but as the Default features of each drive. Although BENQ might be one of the fastest drives to burn a DVD +/-R but has the slowest DL burning speeds.
How's the CD-R / CD-RW writing speeds of BENQ compared to NEC or LG. I think NEC regins in that category. BUt overall LG stands in between NEC and BENQ with NEC leading since NEC drive has much more firmware support than others._______________

Benq 1620 > NEC 3520... and did I hear LG?
Unless you really like to burn DVD-RAMs, avoid LGs. You are better off going with Pioneer 109 of course...

Apr 6th, 2005 09:47 PM #6Well it is indeed funny, when everyone jumps on to those DVD Burner deals posted here & LG being the favorite to come by again and again in deals - in which you save about $15 max. than the current OEM price.

I did a bit of research on this last month....
From all the reviews I have read... seems like the NEC is the best one... while LG and Benq are similar... Benq offers Booktype.. and LG has better error-check...
Benq is the cheapest, LG the second and NEC the most expensive
ended up I got the Benq.. cuz I don't think spending an extra $5-$10 is worth the little performance gain on those other drives...
Flashed it up to the latest firmware... been working solid.._______________

what really sucks is that I am in Taiwan rite now and all these burners are $120 min. here , even the BENQ and ASUS ones which is weird considering they are TW companie.
Apparently they dont sell OEM products here, only retail ones in boxes so we gotta pay full retail price

Apr 8th, 2005 08:27 AM #9Thanks for clarifying that. Even I was stuck with the Price difference ($5-$10) that these drives had. And hence wanted a clear opinion of spending more or not because the difference in price is not big but the performance on paper is ranging from (2.4x - Benq to 6x - NEC) for DL DVD+/-R

if u look at this page, you can find comparsion for the write speed of these 3 drives..
http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/...urners-16.html
as you can see, NEC is clearly the strongest of the three for DL.....
anyway... i am sure there are more guides that feature this type of comparsion..._______________

After scanning the reviews on both cdr-info.com and cdrlabs.com (where DD himself reviewed the LG), it seems like the LG is a slightly better drive than the NEC. Also, the LG is also most likely a better CDRW when it comes to "backing up" your SafeDisc or Securom protected games. I'd probably go for the LG if I didn't already have the Benq 1620

You should get Benq 1620 it the sure way for now unless you need dvd-ram then get a lg 4163.
For Dual layer media, you should wait for when the reviews of the benq 1640 and the nec 3540 goes out.
For protected cd games you need 2 liteon cd burners, one Plextor premium and another (maybe philips?) in order to be able to copy those. Much less complicated to get a "patch" somewhere on google.
