license plate shield
Well so today i was stopped by a cop who told me its illegal to place any screens (tinted) on the license plate. He said the ticket was around 160 but i guess he then decided to be a good cop instead and just issued a warning.
Are these warnings tracked or locked on the systems of MTO. as it was not a routine stop and i was asked to pull over due to this situation and warned, should i be caught again with the screen on license plate on my plates (for instance) would they have a log that i was warned on Sep.14.2009 about the same issue ? any one knows !?

I think they do log it, but it's not like you yourself have a record, just that your car was stopped, and for what reason. Just take the covers off, easy peasy. If you're stopped for something later on, the cop might see the warning but if you have the covers off there won't be any issue.

if you had a clear cover, you're fine, but those blue ones or smoked ones are illegal.

I was told "all" covers are illegal including the dealers

wrong. do your research before spreading misinformation.

wrong. read the HTA. *any* cover can be interpreted as contravening the HTA. even those dealer brackets that aren't actual covers. at the end of the day, it's up to police discretion.

On Sunday August 16th I installed a nice smoked black cover on my rear license plate. The next day I was out at lunch stopped at a red light. There was a cop behind me who then pulled up next to me and told me that my cover was illegal. I ended up pulling into the next gas station and removed it. lol I've never gotten a ticket in 15 years of driving.

clear covers are illegal too since they cover the raised portion of the lettering meaning the plate cant be read if the cover is obscured with mud. A bare plate would still be legible because the letters/numbers are rraised.

no i got warned by the cops about the clear cover too.
stupid, yes.. mto sells it, yes.
if they want to give me a ticket for having a clear non-tinted cover, so be it.
I only have it for my front plate, and it's there to protect the front plate from stupid stone chips or idiots from backing into my car.

I drive a highly modified car with the smoked covers and never have been pulled over for license plate covers, yet. I've been pulled over for the police checking to see how low the car is, tints and etc but never smoked license plate covers.

I ran smoked license plate covers on my old civic for like 4 years with no problems (this was in Peel Region too). Now they're on my brother's Nissan Cube and he's had no problem.
Really it's up to the cop's discretion whether or not he'd actually give you a ticket for them. You must've looked at him/her wrong
