Light Fixtures - green wire
Hi all,
I have a fixture here with 3 connections. The ceiling connection only has two (blk and white). I attempted to install with the two connections, just like the old fixture was installed and it worked fine. What is the green wire for on the new fixture? Do you hook it up to the screw on the steel bracket for a ground? Is it necesarry?
Thanks

Not an expert, but I believe it is the ground. I dunno how necessary it is, but i imagine its safer to screw it on the the bracket just to be safe

It is the ground, and it is necessary.

you don't have to connect the green ground wire if your home has older wiring without a bare ground wire in the cable

Thanks guys
The home is new, and the fixtures which came with the home just had the white/blk wires connected.

If it's a new house, you should have the bare ground wire already connected to the junction box. Connect your green wire to the ground as well.
You don't need the ground connected for the fixture to function, but if a wire ever comes loose in the junction box and energizes the fixture, it can save your life.

Thats your ground wire. Connect it to the green screw in the box.
