I've never installed on anything shy of 80Gb, and the last time I specified partitions manually 4Gb of DDR2 was typical.
Laptop is i7 3517u, 8Gb DDR3, 128Gb Primary SSD, 32Gb mSATA.
mSATA is sitting idle, thinking to install Linux on it; probably Debian. How much swap though? Not planning on huge amounts of storage, media can go on the NTFS drive anyway. Just OS, LAMP server and probably a couple of development packages.
1-2gb swap is enough
I turned off swap on mine last time and set temp/cache files to use the RAM.
What about sleeping with lid closed?
What about it? I've never had an issue with it, although I used Debian KDE. I also tend to set my laptops so they don't automatically sleep when I close the lid, only when I press the sleep shortcut.
Nevermind, thinking of hibernation.
Hm. Haven't used Hibernation is a while. Takes longer than restarting the computer with 8 gigs of RAM. But yeah, if you want to hibernate your swap needs to be as large as your RAM, which isn't really realistic in your case.
Yup. I'll have a go at no swap, just for playing around anyway.
You don't need a dedicated swap partition. You can always add a swap file after if you need it.Quote:
