List of Engineering Businesses in GTA?

Hello, I am currently in 1st year EE. I would like to upgrade my extensive technical experiences to engineering experiences. Please, if you know of any engineering businesses in GTA, especially those that are interested in Student Spring/Summer Employment, please post them up.

For a start...

All automobile manufacturers offer attractive job opportunities for students. (Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, etc...)

hardware design at ATI, you need to know c++, vhdl, c, java, tck/tl, and a whole list of things I never heard of, probably why I didn't get interviewed

Ever consider doing some travelling while you're young and unattached?

I graduated as EE many years ago and good hard-core technical EE work is hard to find in GTA. My employer does some fairly leading edge board design and FPGA design and, aside from ATI, not many high profile companies around town do anything remotely close to leading edge.

Depends on what you're looking to do though. "Softer" EE type of work abounds in the GTA. By softer, I mean you won't be creating the technology, but you'll be deploying existing technology at Rogers, Telus, the banks, etc..

I don't think first years have enough knowledge to do any lower level design and such w/ FPGAs or Microcontrollers for that matter.

I mean, they don't teach you Digital Logic courses and Embedded Systems until 2nd or even 3rd year...

There's alot of leading edge companies in the GTA.

On the top of my head are:

ATI, MD Robotics, Altera, and Bell.

There are some smaller companies that you can cold-call such as:

MDS Sciex, CSA, Johnson-Matthey, Xerox, Honda, OPG, Hydro One.

In fact, you guys should be looking at job opportunities at OPG and HydroOne. They always post summer positions for people like you. However, it is getting late and there aren't alot of positions left. Otherwise, you can trying applying for Research Assistant for a professor in the summer.

RIM has TONS of openings right now and you should check them out.

Why would you need C++/Java for hardware design?? That's software unless they are looking for a well-rounded knowleged people.

they got different positions opening, hardware design, driver design, this and that, yeah, some do require java and c++.

I guess a 1st year student may not want hard-core technical experience nor qualify, so work at any "leading edge" company in TO would still be good experience.

But judging from the anecdotes of my friends and my ex-colleagues at their companies, not many jobs in the GTA require you to really push the technological envelop.

Because of that, I still recommend the young OP to consider getting some out of town experience in some hot company like Google, Cisco, eBay, Microsoft, or even RIM in Waterloo. Once you get out of school and settle down, it'll be really difficult to pull up roots from the GTA to leave, but it's relatively easy to come back.

Besides, that different perspective that you gain from working in a more dynamic environment really changes your personal and professional life. When you come back, it will help inject new ideas and new energy into the companies around here.

Yep, your best bet is to go out and talk to people. Your siblings friends, parents friends, etc...

I just happened to got my first related engineering job last summer because I decided to help my brother move into his new apartment. I met his close friend and then we started talking. Next thing you know, I am working as an engineering technician for the rest of the summer.
