Well seeing as how its 5c/bag that goes straight to the grocers, it is a cash grab.
And 5c/bag isn't enough of a charge to make a drastic difference in people's usage.
Its symbolic on the part of politicians, and profitable for the supermarkets.

If you're a Costco member, you don't even need a receipt.
They have your record on file. But instead of returning you the cash, they would give you a cash card instead. They don't care whether or not it's used or whatever you have inside. Also, theur return is indefinite. They only have a 90 days return policy for electronics. So if you're really interested in buying this, get it from Costco.

It was passed but is not effective yet, IIRC.
Just like with those 99c "envirobags", Loblaws is trying to get a jump on the other supermarkets.
It will cause people to cut back, but not nearly as much if it were more than a nickel.

I'm fine with this surcharge. In fact, I think they should charge a quarter for each plastic bag. I don't use them. I always have my reusable bags in the trunk of my car. No Frills' charge of 5 cents per plastic bag is what made me realize how wasteful they are. It's since caused me to reuse and reduce waste in other areas too.
I like what another member said about Victoria. They've stopped giving them out altogether. Really, if we had the courage, we'd do that.

Don't care. No Frills has been doing this since forever (or at least since I can remember). We always use LCBO bags anyway, although that's going to stop once they all break since the LCBO stopped using plastic bags. No idea where we're going from there. Come to think of it, I thought No Frills charged a nickel way back when I was a kid (15+ years ago). Anyone confirm?

The biggest problem with reusable bags is, you always forget the things at home and either end up buying disposable bags or more reusable bags. Plus sometimes you end up with too many groceries for the number of reusable bags you have or you have more bags than groceries but still have to cart your bags around.
What they should do is have a reusable bag deposit and trade program, if you forget your reusable bags, you can just buy some more, but then you can bring back all your reusable bags whenever you want, hand them back and get some change back, say $89 cents back to the $99 you normally pay, the bags can then be cleaned and resold.

I believe Costco never resells any of the returned merchandise, rather they get sold to liquidators, so I'm sure they don't care. I've never heard of Costco refusing to accept any returns on RFD before.
And I agree, surcharge should be more like 25c to have any affect on people._______________$100 for $100 Silver Bison Coins, $135 or 3 for $380!
Royal Canadian Mint Glass Bumblebee $299!
