Sandikosh is right - backwards compatibility isn't as much of a sought-after feature anymore, especially nearing the end of the PS3 lifecycle. Another factor worth mentioning is that many of the original 60GB launch models have experienced the YLOD; a (non-scientific) survey among 4 of my friends with the original launch model have had to purchase a new one about a year or 2 ago because of that issue.
