Longevity of SMS messages

Following the Dellen Millard trial, I was struck by the number of SMS messages the investigators retrieved.

I'm in the habit of deleting SMS threads periodically, but in view of the staggering number of messages retrieved by the detectives, I'm wondering if SMS ever disappears.

Thoughts/opinions?

Not familiar with the case but it's possible they're retrieving the messages from the carriers. SMS isn't exactly private.

Storage is cheap.
I'd be surprised if carriers ever deleted SMS...

Are you sure "they" pulled the SMS from the server, and not from someone's phone? Unsent SMSes supposedly time out after three days (can't remember exactly), so I would be surprised if sent SMSes are saved on a server.
