I just booked a flight to England yesterday on Air Transat.
I paid $449.20 for a flight to Gatwick in May. I tried Destina, Expedia, British Airways, Air Canada, etc. and they were all almost $1000!
Hands down, British Airways rules. The personal TVs, the toothbrushes, booties, etc. You can't beat em, BUT I am willing to suck it up if it means saving $500!

watch out. gatwick is pretty far from london...at least from heathrow you can connect with the underground from the airport.

Yeah, I know but my final destination is Oxford. For that price, I don't care about a longer bus ride!

Gatwick is only half an hour by express train to Victoria Station in central London. The Tube from Heathrow is about an hour (and it's a pretty rough ride with luggage and all those stairs) while the rather pricey Heathrow Express is 15 minutes to Paddington Station. In other words, the time difference is negligible so it doesn't really matter which airport you land at.

I'm hoping to visit London and Newcastle in May.
Does anyone have any opinions/options on the best way to do this? Should I fly Toronto-London and take the train to and from Newcastle, or fly Toronto-London, train to Newcaslte, flight from Newcastle-Toronto?

Hey there.
The price went up 2 hours later to 475 and I was able to argue with him to bring it back down. It may have gone up since so there is no guarantee. Unfortunately, this guy's ID is at work. So if you can wait until Monday then I will send it to you. Truthfully though, we had no connection. This was the first time I ever called them and I know he was following the rules there and had to get his manager to approve the price drop so if I were you I'd book sooner than never.

If you're interested though, I'll send it on Monday.

As for Mr. Newcastle, go to the NATIONAL EXPRESS bus website. Type in a return bus ride to Newcastle from your airport of choice. They'll give ou a price for Newcastle and then you can determine once you do the math how much it will cost all together depending on what flight and what airline you choose.

I'm hoping to visit London and Newcastle in May.
Does anyone have any opinions/options on the best way to do this? Should I fly Toronto-London and take the train to and from Newcastle, or fly Toronto-London, train to Newcaslte, flight from Newcastle-Toronto?

I'd likely fly to Newcastle directly, or maybe Edinburgh or Glasgow. You'd have to catch a train to Newcastle from the north end of London, which would mean a tube/train journey of 1-1.5 hours from Heathrow or Gatwick. Then, you'd have about a 4 or 5 hour trip to Newcastle. It's likely going to be less hassle to fly into the Newcastle area.

If you went to Edinburgh, I think you could get a train for about 1-2 hours to Newcastle (I'm not sure of the location of the airport in regards to the train).

yeah, but how often have you had a train that was on time in england? i never...

The Gatwick and Heathrow Express aren't "real" trains in that sense. They only go from the airport to the train station and back without stopping in between. They're more like shuttles and unlike British Rail, are very punctual. Hell, Heathrow Express has an in-train BBC news report that's timed to finish exactly as you're pulling into Paddington!

Hey if you're wanting to go to Newcastle for majorly cheap check into Megabus, megabus.com (sometimes there's trouble with the website, so maybe search yahoo) but if you can get on you can get bus tickets sometimes for as little as $4. The buses aren't very comfy (they do have toliets) but it's extremely cheap. The ride is about 6 hours with one stop.
