Looking for low/wide cabinet for a/v stuff
Greetings, Does anyone know of a good source for a contemporary looking cabinet to go under a wall-mounted tv? I'd like something low but wide (6-8') so there is sufficient concealed storage on the sides with exposed (or glass door) shelving in the middle for some of the components. At this point I will consider different finishes and colour as long it is of reasonable quality.

Good score. I've learnt my lesson from that place. If you see something you like, buy it right away...otherwise *poof* it will be gone next time.

I used the Ikea Lack shelf horizontally http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00045560. It's nice and simple and cheaper than a lot of other units I found elsewhere. You can even put Rill casters on it http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/96671300

If you're in the area, check out Bad Boy on Kennedy @ Lawrence. Their selection isn't bad. I got lucky earlier this year and picked up a 6ft long TV stand on clearance for $200. Brand name is Plateau, regular price about $600. I had some smoked glass doors made and installed them myself for another $80.

thx skewed. I have the Rogers HDPVR in the right center opening and it fits perfectly (about 0.5cm of room on each side). I also have a PS3 in there that fits well in the left center opening. I'm using a Yamaha YSP speaker that's wall mounted so I don't know how other stereo components would fit. Most shouldn't be as wide as the HDPVR so I'd figure it should work.
Oh, I forgot to add, for the true RFD'ers, these shelves are almost always in the "As Is" section for $50. I saw a few in there when I bought mine. When I unpacked it, I discovered the scratch was on the bottom panel which would be noticeable as a bookshelf but not as a media stand.

I use the lack shelf as well laying on its side. Holds a lot of weight a the openings are large enough for my stuff (DVD, VCR, sat receiver, etc).
I put 6 of these legs on it and it looks pretty good.
I like that it is narrow, it suits a large plasma a lot better than most "stands" I see in furniture stores.

This company manufactures quite a few different ones . The prices are higher as they are made of solid wood (no particle board here) and finished in your choice of color. The link is for the manufactures site we bought ours locally at Penwood. LINK

Ask any A/V enthusiasts and they would recommend any one of these:

They arn't cheap though, but are built and look world class!

I took a similar TV stand from Ikea, took a divider out to make 3 shelves inside to fit components on each side and a center channel in the center. All I had to do was drill a couple more holes to mount the center supports wider. Very little effort involved to customize it.

Laying flat it should support a couple hundred pounds. Especially if you put casters in the center. That way there will be only two short spans that are unsupported between the outside corner casters and the inside center casters.
