Heh, I just switched all the old school bulbs in my house (that aren't on dimmers) to CFL bulbs just last week.
Not quite ready to invest in LED bulbs yet, but the CFL bulbs are just so much more efficient than the old school ones I replaced around the house (replaced around 40 bulbs).

The 12.5W Philips AmbientLED bulbs (60W equivalent) are around $22 after coupon at HD. I finally broke down and bought ONE bulb to put in a floor lamp that I'm always worried is going to get knocked over. For that reason I've only used regular incandescent bulbs in it but always wanted to go LED but they were too expensive, too dim and too ugly until now. I have to say I'm really impressed with the philips bulb - behind the lamp shade, we can't even tell the difference between it and what was in it before (soft while 60w incandescent dinosaur). These philips bulbs are HEAVY because of the big heatsinks, at least you feel like you're getting some serious equipment for the money. Has anybody used both the 12.5W philips bulb and these lowes bulbs that can comment on the difference... I'm expecting the philips bulbs to be both much brighter and give off a more natural light but they are more than twice the price so it may still be worth the sacrifice.
I have to say I'm tempted to replace the rest of the spots in the house that still use the A19 bulbs, they're all currently CFLs since they're in fixtures that don't stand much of a chance of suffering any kind of accident... and while we've finally got a bulb that basically is just as good light quality wise as the incandescents (certainly would be a bit of an upgrade over the CFLs this way as well) I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it for the whole house yet because...
1) They keep getting cheaper and even better.
2) What am I supposed to do with all of these "perfectly good" CFLs, recycle them? I hate waste... then again I can think of a number of people I know who still haven't even bothered to move to CFLs that would probably be happy to use them. I could think of it as doing double duty on energy conservation.
I think I'm just going to stick to the spots I haven't been able to use CFLs yet that use A19s just because I wanted an economical properly dimming system.Last edited by BinaryJay; Oct 9th, 2012 at 11:01 PM.

I don't see the allure of these bulbs, you can get 13W bulbs for 6 for $10. That's already a huge improvement over the 100W or 60W old bulbs. Is it worth all that extra money to save 6 more watt? Am I missing something?

Replace high usage area we LED's and migrate CFL to low usage areas. I only have LED in the higher usage area's right now. Won't replace em entirely till prices go way down and they get better. One of the better bulbs on the market right now is the L Prize Philips, but it's US only from Home Depot.

LED actually also flicker, but at a much higher frequency; so it is usually not perceptible.
As for the quality of light, it is actually not always better than CFL.
Incandescent bulb has a Color Rendition Index of 100. Most CFL has CRI of around 85.
LED bulb can vary a lot. Some may go up to 90. But most LED bulbs like Philips AmbientLED has CRI of 80.

Just went to the Lowes at Castlefrank & Caledonia last night and the cashier said that the $5 coupons don't work on these bulbs since they are not on "the list". She showed me the list and it only had 2 qualifying LED bulbs on it. She claimed that the list comes from the Ontario Power Authority (the coupon providers).
They had lots of bulbs BTW. They actually had two different packages for what looked like the exact same bulb. One said "general purpose" and one said "standard" but all the other specs looked the same.

Can someone please take a pic of how "natural" the light looks? I'd like to change out the bulbs from those energy-thirsty potlights but I need the replacement to be dimmable too :P
