My Macbook Pro graphics card failed, would I be able to retrieve my files by placing the hardrive into a USB enclsoure and plugging it into another MAC as an external drive? I'm not familiar enough with the File System.

You should be able to retrieve the files by putting the drive into an external enclosure.
How old is your Macbook? Does it have the nVidia 8xxx card?

Ya it does have the dreaded nVidia videocard failure. I was 3 months out of the 4 year warranty extension. Apple refused to help. Such nonsense. If there was an engine design flaw in a car, would Honda say "well... we've decided that if the flawed design lasts you 4 years, then you got your money's worth and we're off the hook."
I have an iPad2, 2x iPhone's in the home, a MacBook Pro (dead now) and a MacBook.... you'd think they'd do something for me.Last edited by ck1223; Jul 15th, 2012 at 09:22 AM.

My friend also had his Macbook Pro fail due to the nVidia issue. Where are you located? He paid around $100 to have it repaired, but it only came with a 90 day warranty. He figured he should be able to save enough money in that time to get a good used MacBook Pro.

I'm in Toronto. Apple said they'd repair it for $450? I figured why waste the money when that's 50% of the cost of a new MacBook.

Do you recall the name of the place? $100 isn't bad. Is his Macbook still functioning? How long has it lasted after the repair?

It's only been approximately 3 weeks since he had it repaired and it's been fine so far.
This is where he went (place looks kind of dumpy but the guy seems to really knows his stuff):
Frontier Technology Services
Electronic and Computer Services
1230 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON
M6H 1N3 Ont Canada
Main Intersection: Bloor / Dufferin
Ph: 416-278-9058
Maybe check out Craigslist as well as I see a lot of places that also diagnose and repair Macbooks.
When you went to the Apple store, did the tech hook the laptop up to their diagnostic equipment? Did the Apple tech tell you the error code it generated?
Edit: I recommend that you perhaps call and discuss the issue with the tech before deciding on a repair. You have to feel comfortable with the tech before leaving your equipment for repair.Last edited by audit13; Jul 15th, 2012 at 09:42 AM.

Out of warranty is exactly that. Which company would help you?
I bought the first white Macbook in 2006. 1 month out of warranty the logic board died, sold the thing for parts. I have bought 3 Macs since that white Macbook. Last year I put a Crucial M4 into my 09 MBP and it's like brand new again.

If they refused to do nothing for you, then they must have done something for you.
I had 3 Acura's that were fantastically engineered automobiles. But then Acura wouldn't fix my car after the warranty ran out. Now I only buy Dodge - they're crappy cars, but I'll never forgive Acura for not giving me something for nothing.

It's out of warranty, what do you want any logical company to do when a thing is not covered? They sucker you in with the great service because really you're paying for PC hardware in a fancy case and adding 50% to the price and that's it. Sadly people haven't figured out that their hardware is junk.
Save your money, buy a PC laptop and install Ubuntu or some other Linux distro if you hate Windows so much and it'll last you longer. Who the heck solders and glues batteries so end users can't do anything to their system besides Apple? Nobody._______________

poor people shouldnt buy apple products.
it doesnt matter if it is 1 day after the warranty or one year, if they warrenty is passed, it passed, they have to draw the line somewhere. what is the deal with the OP wanting special treatment, the OP is the worse kind of customer there is, apple and it's shareholders like myself DO NOT want needy poor desperate customers like the OP.
if the OP wants a mac so badly, buy another mac (if you can afford it LOL).
