No shit!

If we built rental homes (or even multifamily condo/strata properties) that could better accommodate family life things might be viewed differently. If you have more than one kid, want a place to host an occasional family christmas, have a canoe or kayak, even finding a place to setup a christmas tree in a modern apartment or condo is a struggle. It's pretty obvious that a regular house is a HUGE step up and historically has been cheaper than renting.

So many people fall into the trap of "if you're a homeowner you're awesome and if you rent you are a degenerate". There is a reason for this. Many many companies do well when people own houses - home improvement stores, construction/tradespeople, banks, insurance companies, lawyers, real estate agents, the list is endless. But it's what's best for them! You have to think for yourself, there is no right or wrong answer for everyone. Sometimes rent makes sense. Sometimes owning makes sense. Depends on a lot of factors and it's not just money.

Make whichever choice is best for you, don't assume just because you rent that you aren't successful in life. There are lots of perks of renting, one being that you have freedom to move whenever you want with a few months notice. Good luck doing that with a house if the market is bad.

And a mortgage is just renting money from a bank.
