Male Office Worker Wardrobe Staples

So I am starting a new job in a formal office environment. Everyday is dress pants and dress shirt and I presume a suit on occasion for presentations etc.

What are the staple pieces and colours I need to have a decent size wardrobe but within reasonable price range? I mean I could go and buy lots of fancy shirts but what basic colours would you recommend for shirts and pants? I need to be able to make a decent number of combinations out of these.

Do I need black and brown shoes or will just black be okay?
