Shocked witnesses told police the man jumped into the water from a wall above the Horseshoe Falls, plunging some 50 metres. He is the third person to survive the plummet without safety gear.
Orescanin said the man swam to the shore from the Niagara River — a tumultuous stretch of water riddled with whirlpools.
Suicide fail by the jumper. I wonder what it must have felt like going of the falls, and hitting the bottom with tonnes of water falling on your head. So will he have to pay a fine for this or no? Assuming he is Canadian, ohip will pay for his rescue efforts and hospital bill. He could have just continued down the river and gotten it over with. Also do you think they should build a higher wall to prevent jumping over the falls? The current wall/railing is very low and anyone can just leap over that thing with little effort if they desired.

“He did go over the falls and his injuries are in line with that,” said Niagara Falls fire department platoon chief Dan Orescanin.
I thought injuries from going over the falls meant death not swimming to shore.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked stuntman for this post.

If he really wanted to die, why did he swim to shore? I guess he chicken out last minute.

I bet they have a lot of jumpers at night time when nobody sees them go over, and no body is found. Must me dozens of bodies at the bottom of the falls.

He hated his life. Nothing unique about him. So he decides to kill himself. Jumps over Niagara falls, realizes he survived, swims to shore, knowing how awesome he is for surviving, wants to live again.

It seems the falls aren't as dangerous as everyone makes out them to be.

No it is pretty dangerous.
Very lucky of him to survive that.
Just think about all the force that was applied to the body when he hit water and afterwords all the water hitting on top of him.
That's a lot of force._______________

Its possible. Some people even survive gun shots to the head.
edit: although slim!
But I can imagine there are ways to survive a fall... Maybe the wind blew him to the softer part of the water.
Maybe its a sign... For him to start living._______________

While people have survived going over the horseshoe, I don't think anyone has survived falling off the American side of the falls. It looks even more dangerous on that side with all the rocks and stuff.
It seems the falls aren't as dangerous as everyone makes out them to be.
My first thought when I saw this on the news Sunday night was, "Tightrope walker Nik Wallenda can't be too happy about this."
Wallenda is scheduled to perform a "death-defying" tightrope walk over the falls on June 15th.
Perhaps it's not so "death-defying" after all?
By coincidence, a few minutes ago I happened to see this new (May 22nd) news article:
"Wallenda to Be Tethered to Niagara Falls Tightrope - ABC News" [Source]
Daredevil Nik Wallenda says he's not happy about it but he'll probably be tethered to the tightrope that he plans to walk over Niagara Falls next month.
Wallenda said Monday that ABC is adamant about making him wear the safety device out of consideration for viewers who tune in to the network's three-hour, prime-time special on June 15.
(continued..)
Thanks ABC, no need to waste 3 hours of my life watching your broadcast.Last edited by RenegadeX; May 22nd, 2012 at 12:05 PM.
