Is it more likely that Meridian keeps their rate steady because it is a new promotion (starting July 22nd) or that Manulife keeps their steady for a little bit because they just decreased it?
Put your money in whichever account pays better on that day. If one drops (or the other raises) their rate, move it.
As soon as the promo is done I'm closing my account.
Let's face it, we were all doing that anyway. None of us was sticking for 1.50% as it was, it was going back to EQ or someone else paying better.
but at tangerine, if they advertise for example, 3.00%
Tangerine guarantees the 3.00% and adjusts the bonus rate when the base rate changes. Manulife advertises possible rate change, but it could have been in either direction.

What really annoys me is that Manulife didn't inform us the rate was changed.

Stupid question.....I originallly opened the account when the $500,000 limit was in place....then recently moved some money out taking it down to approx $100k. I'm assuming any money I move back in now above 100k won't qualify for the bonus interest given the limit change to 100k?

You'd assume wrong. You were offered bonus interest up to $500k. That offer stands no matter any intermediate balance.

People who signed up afterwards were offered only up to $100k. That limit stands for them but not for you.

But the best way to confirm this is to (a) read the Ts and Cs you agreed to and/or (b) call Manulife CS and have them confirm it for you.

Man... I'm quite upset about this rate decrease. I opened this Manulife account just for the extra 0.25% since HSBC was offering me 3% promo, however now they are basically identical. No point in using the Manulife account anymore. I am part of the people who was only eligible for the 3.25% initial Manulife offer (not 3.35 %), but now it's meaningless. :(
The HSBC 3% runs only until Sept.3. Their new targeted retention offer starting Sept. 4 is 2.35%.

The Manulife 3% runs until December.

I found the promotional interest 3.25% rate on Manulife Bank web-site for Advanced Account and opened account on line, by clicking the promotional rate link. I transferred money from another Bank I reviewed my account at Manulife bank on September and found that the rate 1.25% . When I called to the bank, It was explained to me that the rate was NOT!!! promotional at the day when my account was opened. Customer Representative not agreed that it was bug/issue/false statement on the Manulife Bank web-site. Finally I submitted complain and waiting for response.

There is no fee if you keep a zero balance with Manulife. They only charge if you transact when you have less than $1000. I am going to wait till I get my interest for September, deposit $1000 and then I can safely withdraw the interest with no fees. Then I will consider closing the account.

Yes, it's CDIC insured up to $100,000 and it's a subsidiary of Laurentian Bank that's been around for many generations.
