I have 20k marriot rewards points from travel. What's the best bang for buck for redeeming? Was looking at gift cards and can get $50 card for 17.5k points - is it worth it?

Also noted since my last transaction, i have about 1 yr 4 months left before they expire (2 year expiry if no activity), so I want to figure out whats best use of points.

Gift cards are generally the worst option when it comes to redeeming points. In the example you mentioned, you're getting less than 0.3 cents/point, which is absolutely terrible.

20K points can get you 2 nights at a Category 2 Marriott property. These hotels generally cost at least $100/night, so you would be getting 1 cent/point ($200 value - 4x the gift card)

Of course, this is assuming that the hotel nights are useful to you. If not, you could also transfer the points to a frequent flyer program, but the transfer ratios from Marriott are pretty bad.

I've found redeeming hotel stays abroad to be much better value than redeeming nights in North America. I redeemed a night in JW Marriott in Bogota for 25000/night (discounted from 30k / night), and it was definitely up the JW standards. Another example was staying in a Courtyard in VIenna for 15k/ night.

I know it is free, but the ROI for the time spent is not so great.
Each Marriott point is worth about 1cent. Doing this for a month for 1500pts gets you about $1.5 worth of points. Even a lower tier category 4 properties require 20,000 pts per night.
Bad math $15, fifteen dollars, by your rate,
