Olympus 12-40 f2.8 Pro - $530 USD ($700 CAD)

Retailer:
Massdrop
Great price for a great lens. Lowest price I could find locally is $1150 + tax from Costco's online members site. The price includes shipping but duty can be hit or miss.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/olympus-m- ... s#overview

Edit: It's an international version therefore no Olympus warranty in Canada. Assuming no duties, you're saving $200 over a grey market version from Amazon. Hotness downgrading.

Good price, but I assume gray market / no warranty. No return policy I assume?

No idea. Never purchased a lens from Massdrop. It doesn't ship until November 20th, so I will join the drop and then back out if they cannot confirm warranty.

Just checked, you have until October 28th to back out of the drop if you are not interested. No answer yet on if Olympus will honour the warranty, but if they do not, you have a 30-day warranty from Massdrop.

When do they charge the credit card? Now or when they ship? Do they accept Paypal?

Just confirmed it's the international version (no warranty). Given the uncertainty with duties, I would suggest that Amazon is a viable alternative at $779 + tax. It's $200 more, but there's no uncertainty of being slapped with duties when you get your item (https://www.amazon.ca/Interchangeable-E ... dpSrc=srch).

Payment is collected when the drop ends (October 28th) and they do accept Paypal.

Isnt the 12-40mm zoom almost the same as the kit lens? the only difference is the f-stop of 2.8 compared to 3.5.

Am i missing anything?

This is the pro series, it is like the L lens in the Olympus world. It is also weather sealed.

It's a nice lens, I'm sure it's much optically sharper than the standard 12-50 kit lens.

That said, f2.8 on micro four thirds gives the same depth of field as f5.6 on full frame, so it's not that exciting. I will stick with my 45mm f1.8 which at least gives some bokeh, but apples vs oranges.

I have limited exp with m4/3 lenses, I read it is at least above 4/3 HG. And the diff between the ED kit lenses and HG/SHG was massive.

I"m sure it's a nice lens. I just don't really understand m43 'pro' lenses... are any pros actually using m43? If so, why?

I also find that m43 gear is much slower / harder to resell vs Canon / Nikon / Sony gear.

Many shooting pro videos with the GH5/GH5S, the Olympus lens can be great.

That's fair, it's just the control of depth of field is so limited, I would personally never use m43 on a paid shoot.

It's a nice light cheap system with great optics for casual users and hobbyists, that's the way I see it.

Also important to note that one of the most popular portrait photographer shoots 4/3, Sean Archer.
