To scoop, crimsondr, and Angel_wing0 - thanks for the explanation.. I looked at how much I spent on gas/groceries on my first MBNA bill - I only spent $280 - now I'm going to do the same.. spend approximately $300 for gas cards and use them after the 5% promo is finished.
thanks for the tip!

Updated Application Info
Here's some more application info from a letter that I just got from a co-worker who was actually invited to apply. Note the application call-in number and priority code:
Dear agent86,
Great news: Because you're a valued MBNA customer, we're about to offer you one of the best cash back credit cards on the market. It's called the MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard credit card.
Earn cash back for what you buy.
- 5% for gas and grocery purchases for the first 6 months
- 3% for gas and grocery purchases thereafter
- 1% for all other net retail purchases
- And there's NO Annual Fee
Use your cash to buy whatever you want.
Once your cash back totals at least $50 per monthly billing cycle, we'll automatically mail you a cheque. There are no restrictions on what you can use your cash back for either. With the MBNA Smart Cash card, you can spend your reward money any way you like. It's that simple.
Apply now and take advantage of our special offer.
The MBNA Smart Cash card features a competitive Annual Interest Rate of 13.99% and No Annual Fee.

well a calendar month is 1-30 (assuming 30 day month), a cycle might be 15/x-14/y (assume another 30 day cycle). Makes ALL the difference.
