I just applied for this card over the phone and the rep said the $600 cap is on a monthly basis. Is this true?
So say I earn $600 cash back at 3%, I will be back at 3% the following month and not 1%.

This is a short story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about this, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
Which Person are YOU!!!

My dad called me to tell me that some card has arrived for me in the mail, probably from MBNA as I'm not expecting anything else.
Too bad I'm not going home tonight so I have to wait until tomorrow.

No. The $600 is spending limit / month that will earn you 3% cash back.
Let me put this other way, you buy $2000 worth of gas and groceries in a month, your RoR will be the following:
$0 - $600 -> 3%
$601 - $2000 -> 1%
In essence it is a reverse tier on a monthly basis where your return rate drops after reaching a certain amount.

No no.. you have it wrong because you can't use the card to buy from GCR or you won't get 3%. And GCR alone gives you 3.5%, so you are significantly behind here. Also CT does not give you CTmoney if you pay with a CC directly.
Smart cash card: 3% back on the gas.
Standard 1% back card: 1% back on GCR purchase, 3.5% back from GCR, 2%-3% back in CT money. Total is 6.5%-7.5%. Ahead: 3.5%-4.5%.
SPG card: 4%-6% back on GCR purchase. 3.5% back from GCR, 2%-3% back in CT money. Total is 9.5%-12.5%. Ahead: 6.5%-9.5%.Last edited by brunes; Apr 16th, 2009 at 07:26 PM.

I just applied for the card. Does anyone know what the process is to activate it?
I am getting it for the car rental insurance. It may not come until after I leave for my trip. So I might get my wife to activate it if it is an automated system and then bring the card when she arrives 2 weeks later.
