I got the new card design in the mail and I am only a Platinum Plus cardholder NOT a world cardholder. How do they tell the difference now? Does the World start with a different set of numbers? Just curious.

I think the SC World is grandfathered as the new SC application makes no mention of it at all.

Just did an online chat and it seems that the world version is still available but you have to call in.

Bruno: Hello, I am here to assist you today. May I have your name please?

you: Budd

Bruno: Hi Budd, thank you for visiting our website, how may I assist you today?

you: Is the smart cash world still available?

Bruno: Yes, we do have the MBNA smart cash card.

you: I mean the world version

Bruno: You can apply for the smart cash card, and you can call and request for switching it to the world version.

For the first 6 months, yes. After that the Tangerine MC is much better.
But why not use both at the same time? I thought about scrapping SC World altogether when I got my Tangerine MC, but then realized my gas and groceries doesn't really exceed $400 a month, so I kept it and use the Tangerine as my Restaurant and Home Improvement card.

Only switched around this past month because of the 4% boost.
The myth on the Internet is that Canadians are nice people. Those people who say this just haven't been on RFD.

Well.... The end of an era has occurred.

In 2009 I opened two MBNA smart cash cards thanks to this thread. In spring 2011, I opened a 3rd card. TD bought out this bank in December 2011 and shortly after lowered the rewards from 3% to 2% on gas and groceries. In sping 2013 I closed the 3rd card and was back to two cards. In winter 2015 I closed the 2nd card. This left me with 1 MBNA smart cash card. Now that my $50 was credited to my account in spring 2016..... Today I called MBNA and I closed the final MBNA credit card. I am now MBNA card free. It's been a good run. I earned hundreds of dollars in free rewards. I kept waiting for MBNA to allow conversions to the world version with less restrictions on the 1% limit but bye bye MBNA. Closed my 22k limit today.

Thank you to this thread and everyone in here. Now on to my new combo - RBC Cashback Mastercard (2% at Grocery stores, and Walmart), and Tangerine Mastercard (2% at Gas, Bill payments, and Food) with no $50 increment restrictions.

What do you mean by $50 increment restrictions? Every month my SmartCash deducts from my balance whatever I have earned as long as it's over $50. So if it's $78.23, that's what gets applied to the balance, so long as it's $50 minimum. But not in $50 increments.

In reality it is the same card, just a upgrade.

That's true... But they still won't switch you to it. They want you to fill out a new application.

There has never been a separate application needed for the world card. Just the income requirement of $60,000. On the online chat as I posted 8 prior to this one the csr stated " Bruno: You can apply for the smart cash card, and you can call and request for switching it to the world version. "

What I'm saying though... Its EVEN if you meet the income/spending requirements... If you have an existing card that was opened as a regular smart cash.... They will NOT switch it.... If you apply new they will give you the world if you qualify... But they will not switch you after the platinum plus normal version has been issued.... I tried for 2 years... The CSR lied in that convo.

I'm not saying that you're incorrect but the Smart Cash World is no longer on the application as it was 2 month's ago. Things have changed in the past few months where mbna was discontinuing the Smart Cash then bringing it back, then discontinuing and then reinstating it again. The only way to truly know, would be to apply, receive the regular card and then call in to upgrade it to the world. I would do that but I already have the world version of the Smart Cash card.

I tried yesterday again... They told me not possible... I cancelled the platinum plus card on the spot. I had that card since 2009.

I got a report on my site (HowToSaveMoney.ca) that the World edition of the card was no longer being offered which surprised me. I came here to see if others were saying the same thing. It turns out they are.

I decided to contact MBNA chat myself to get further confirmation and use very clear language. The chat rep, Julie, confirmed that card is no longer being offered to new and existing customers and is grandfather. Here is the chat log:

Chat Information

You are now being connected with Julie, an Online Application Specialist.

Julie: Hello, I am here to assist you today. May I have your name please?

you: Hi Julie, my name is Stephen
you: I have several MBNA cards and am very interested in your products.
you: I have read several reports online in the past month that the Smart Cash WORLD is no longer available to new customers.

Julie: Hi Stephen.

you: What I want to know with 100% certainty isif the Smart Cash Platinum Plus can still be upgraded to the World edition.
you: and #2) Can you still receive the World edition when you apply online if your income and credit history are good enough?

Julie: Stephen, there is no option to upgrade the card from Smart cash credit card to smart cash world credit card.
Julie: As of now MBNA Smart cash world master card.
Julie: As of now MBNA do not offer Smart cash world master card.

you: There used to be an option to do that - so are you saying that option has been completely removed? That means the card has been 100% grandfathered and there is no way for new customers to get it and existing Platinum Plus customers to upgrade?

Julie: Yes that is correct.

you: Ok, thanks for confirming that Julie.
