McDonald's do not sell soft serve ice cream. But they do sell Vanilla Cone, which is not ice cream.

So they're legally called soft serve ice cream in the States but not Canada?

Canada has different regulations when it comes to "ice cream" to be called "ice cream".

The definition of ice cream in the US is stricter than in Canada. You'd be surprised of what BS can pass for ice cream here and yet many companies don't even meet that low bar. In the US, it's called a cone as well on their menu.

You sure about that? Around here, unless it contains cream it can only be called a “frozen dessert”.

It's not so much it contains cream but rather the milk fat content. You need at least 10% milk fat and 50% solids for it to be called ice cream in the US. In Canada, it's 10% milk fat and 36% solids. BTW the 50% in the US and 64% in Canada that are not solids is air.

In the US, companies can get away with jargon like "reduced fat ice cream" or "low fat ice cream", but I think in Canada it has to be called ice milk or frozen dessert... or something like that. But going back to this thread, McDonald's soft serve doesn't qualify as ice cream in Canada or the US.

It's more ice cream than that stuff they sell at Sweet Jesus. That stuff is appalling, it's closer to Cool Whip than ice cream.

Hence the amount of guar gum and whatever stabilisers are required so the (presumably cheap) airy stuff doesn't collapse.

fat, solids, WATER, air. It is called "Ice Milk". Milk ingredients, sugar, modified milk ingredients, glucose, mono and diglycerides, guar gum, dextrose, carrageenan, cellulose gum, natural flavour, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate.

Anyone found differences between McD's locations?

One place near my has really good "ice cream" and it has a better vanilla flavour and it's more yellow than other locations. It seems to be extra cold too.

MCD Canada tread ever so lightly when they wished Canada a happy ice cream days a few months ago, but was careful not to say their stuff was ice cream and did not offer a discount.

Sounds like the creator of that video should take note.
However, if you settle for Strawberry, as a scoop (not in a cone)
they do call it ice cream in the States... https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/prod ... -cone.html
