Admissions is based on both marks and the supplementary app, but marks are very important. I don't think over 90 in each of the 6 courses is that important, its the average, and obviously the higher the better. Shad doesn't give you any kind of advantage, but you are right that a lot of health scis went to shad (just the type of people I think). And for the workload, it really depends on what electives you choose - the upper years of health sci have a lot of room for elective courses.

SNOW DAY AT MCMASTER
Ok apparently not a lot of Mac students here. Any way it's not on the website, but I was e-mailing one of my profs and he e-mailed me back saying McMaster is closed today.

Health Sciences is a joke. Sure the program may be competitive to get into, but the professors in that faculty pressure their teaching staff to inflate their marks. A year ago, a professor teaching anatomy and physiology caught an entire group of health scis who posted a previous exam on the mcmaster community forum. The students were allowed to go in and review their written exams, but allegedly took an exam out of the room and photocopied it.

Yeah there are lots who commute. I commuted my last couple of years from Mississauga, it's <1 hr on the GO from SQ1, and approx 1hr on the train. There's a GO student card which allows for cheaper fares. Although there is something to be said about living in residence, it's definitely a good experience for those that possess a bit of self control.

commerce is pretty ez, youve gotta be pretty dumb to not make it...2nd year isnt as much hard as they just pile a ton of **** on you. anyways, im fairly unimpressed with the commerce program, the curriculum needs a lot of work. There are lots of courses that are pretty much useless i.e. info systems, operations management and the like. you can pass them all without going to class and forgot about it all right after the final.
im in 3rd year doing finance and they dont prepare you enough with knowledge of the financial markets. The best things I learn are what I teach myself. Also, it sucks for accounting b/c you have to do an extra entire summers worth of courses!

to the people who applied to BComm, if you dont mind answering a few questions...
What was your average when you applied? (both receiving the letter and final grade)
What year?
When did you receive acceptance (early/late/mid whichever month)?
Thanks!

I'm in 2nd year Mac BComm....
1. My average when I applied, after 1st semester grade 12 incl. grade 11, was 86.7%. My final after 2nd semester was around 83.2%.
2. In the class of 2010, so in 1st year, it was 2006/2007.
3. I don't remember when I was accepted but it was pretty early on, right around January?
And for the individual who said 2nd year isn't that difficult, I suppose if you are talking about just getting in to 3rd year honours....no you have to be mighty dumb for that. But in order to keep a high GPA (atleast a 10 or 11 CA), that's quite difficult. Actually difficult courses in 2nd year are 2FA3 Finance and 2AA3, 2AB3 accounting with maybe ECON 2X03 Intermediate Microeconomics being confusing. The other courses are quite useless (Info systems, organizational behaviour, statistics). The transition from 1st to 2nd year is brutal and cannot be exaggerated enough. It's not that 2nd year is actually THAT hard but the difference from 1st year is dumbfounding. I find myself in the library everyday nowadays whereas I never needed to read the textbooks to get a 10 CA (A- average) in first year. Don't know if that is how the commerce program at other schools is run?Last edited by ProfessorChaos; Feb 5th, 2008 at 10:43 PM.

i got in with early acceptance with an 81? i think something like that and i started 2005. ya 2fa3 is pretty hard course, it helps to have a good prof though. chamberlain is a good finance prof, so hope you get him. ur right about marks if you want a 10 or 11, you have to hit the books pretty hard. to keep a good avg is hard b/c most of the courses are just hard to nail down. This is b/c most courses attempt to combine social science with business and the results are dismal. so if you have the capacity to memorize pointless stuff, like the difference between a team and a group then its possible to do well. I had to learn that for 2 separate courses in the same year! Time would be better spent on technical knowledge, the negotiations class was pretty useful.
Anyways, im almost 3/4 done and I realize that my marks dont matter all that much, you're not going to grad school straight out of undergrad so theres plenty of time to study for mcats or lsats or wat not. I have realized that the most important part of our education is to gain intrinsic value from the university experience and this is usually not attained in gaining high marks.
