med skool

hi im in high school right now but want to go into the medical profession. And i was wondering wat course i should take in university. i did some lookin up and found that life sciences is a good choice but i dunno how it works becuse it seems to have many sub categories. It is like everyone who takes life sciences for first year does certain subjects in general and as the year progresses say year 1 and 2 that you focus on a subtopic say microbilogy or neurology. Also i want to know which sub topic in life sciences if what i tink is rite about the subtopics i should take. Im planning for neurology or cell and microbilogy.

Take any prerequisites for med school (not sure if there are any) and the courses that genuinely interest you. But then, make sure also to take courses that will allow you maintain a high GPA. You do not have to take a science undergrad to go to med school. High GPA, high MCAT, lots of extracurriculars and good personal characteristics is what gets you into med school. The specific courses you take or your major isn't that important.

Effective communication is important in whatever profession you decide on. Effective communication includes spelling and grammar.

Go to the ontario university application centre....and look at the med school requirements. It is all listed there. You can take any undergrad as long as you take the required science coures....(i believe the req'ts are: 1 yr life sciences, 1 yr chemistry, 1 yr organic chemistry (it may be only one semester), physics....and biochemistry)

First ... buy a dictionary if you haven't already done so. You definitely need one.

Second ... correct your spelling ... use a spellchecker if you have to.

Last ... if you can't spell ... I wouldn't even think about a profession in the Medicals ... you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between male and female.

Agreed. You need the HIGHEST MARK you can get. So, just looking at Science field, you have to weigh between:

1 ) Take an easy Major/Specialist program = higher mark = better changes to Meds
- but if you don't get into meds, how many companies will higher someone from Human Biology? Or General Sciences?

2) Take a harder program = Genetics, Pharmacology, Neruo = lower marks = less chances to get into Med school
- but, if you don't get into Med school, you hve more chances of getting a job in a lab, pharmaceutical company with a degree in Genetics, Pharm, Neuro

Its a hard game to play. But this is on every potential Med School applicants' mind. (Assuming you aren't a Straight A student)

Some med schools require many more sciences than others, some require MCATs and some don't. Do your research. I agree with other posters, take something that you will EXCEL in - so if you kick @ss in religion, then take religious studies, get your 99%, then supliment those courses with some bio, chem, physics etc.

And remember that you need a great autobiography, which means lots of volunteering, participating in extra-curriculars, sports, travel, etc. Most schools are looking for someone well-rounded, not some geek who got 99% in science but still lives in his parents' basement and has never been anywhere other than a library.

Good luck!

Don't forget it's also not all about marks. At least here in BC, in order to get an interview, you get graded on a 50 point scale, and you need to get 37 I think before you get considered for an interview. Only 25 points come from marks (including MCAT score) and the other 25 points comes from extracurricular activites, mostly volunteer work related to health care.

Google "Premed forum" and the first link should answer all your questions. It's a bulletin board founded by a then current medical student. There's a lot of posts on what you need to think about.
