I've had inexperienced cashiers forget several times to give the CT money. After a few GCs they're all confused thus the good practice to give them no more than 4 GCs at a time and remind them of the CT money. Bottom of receipt has line "BASE CT MONEY" with amount earned. They'll want it back for returns.

beware of gas station attendants
i've posted this before, but i think i should mention it again.
for those in the GTA, beware of the canadian tire gas station across from Pacific Mall. the attendant there tends to be VERY VERY VERY SLOW in giving you the CT money and Sobey money.....so slow that it makes you think if he was trying to keep it for himself. sometimes he will give it to you the last second before you leave, sometimes he doesn't give you anything unless you ask. this is true for all the times that we've been there. not just once or twice. and he won't take more than 1 giftcard too, although the other CT will. he's very tricky, watch out.

hey hey hey..
I haven't logged into my lifestyles account in a long time.. looks like they may have bumped stores up to $500 each... I can order $500 for some restaurants that I've never touched, while other stores seem to have some more that I can buy when I'm pretty sure that I already maxed them out!

The software @ some stations only allow them to process one gift card per transaction.

I know. This is the most obvious suggestion we should bring up. Obviously the "safest" way to trade is with sealed purolator envelopes for those local traders you're not familiar with. Be sure to post recommendations there as the mods don't follow this thread and have probably never traded gift cards before.
