Is it 100% for sure that the legit Memory Sticks will have the engraved printing on the back?
I bought a 2GB Pro Duo and it appears to be legit in every way except the etched letters on the back. There is no printing on the back whatsoever. I threw away the packaging so I can't look at that, but there are no other warning signs of counterfeit besides the missing printing on the back (the metal contacts are all perfect and look exactly like the 32MB Duo that came with my PSP, the card came with the Sony Memory Stick adaptor in the package, it definitely holds 2GB and reads/writes quickly, it is exactly the same size as the 32MB Duo that came with my PSP and I have no problem inserting/removing it from my PSP).
I bought it off eBay but from a US seller with like 2000 99.9% positive feedback, and the price I paid was a good deal but nothing outrageous like the deals direct from China (it was about the same price as Buy.com). I suppose he could have been buying from China and reselling, but I don't know. As I said it works perfectly, but I'm also using it for my digital camera so my main concern is that it's going to fail right when I've got some irreplaceable pictures on it.
Can anyone confirm that no printing on the back is a 100% ironclad guarantee that it's a fake?

Here is a follow up to my previous post...
I noticed that on my 32M stick (the one that came with my PSP) the text on the front is printed right on the stick. However, with the 2GB I got off eBay there is a sticker on the front with the text printed on it. (To illustrate, if you go to sonystyle.com and look at the 2GB Pro Duo it looks like the text is printed right on the card. If you look at the 2GB High Speed Pro Duo though, you'll see that it looks like a sticker on the front. Mine has the sticker, although it's not a High Speed, just a regular Pro.)
After closer inspection, I noticed the back of my stick also has a sticker on it. My 32M stick does not have a sticker. I originally thought there was no text printed on the back, but if you look really close at just the right angle you can see some faint text. I'm wondering if there is engraved text on the stick that's showing through the sticker slightly. I am tempted to try and remove the sticker to confirm this one way or the other, but I'm afraid I'll just make a big mess of the back of the stick.
I went to my local Sony store today to look at their Memory Sticks. Their 2GB Pro Duo clearly had a sticker on the front and was not printed directly on the stick--just like mine. However, I don't know what the back of the stick looked like, and the sales guy didn't want to open one to show me. I asked him if he had an opened one I could look at, and it was an old blue 16MB stick, which doesn't allow for any kind of comparison.
So now I'm really wondering whether or not mine is fake. Even though it doesn't have text printed on the back, I'm wondering if some of the newer legitimate sticks (the ones with the stickers on the front) have stickers on the back without the printed text. I was REALLY tempted to buy the one from the Sony store, but I wasn't happy about shelling out the money just to see if mine is fake or not.
Does anyone have a newer 2GB stick with the sticker on the front? A couple of pages ago in this thread someone posted some pics of their stick and it looked exactly like mine--sticker on the front, and sticker on the back with no printed text. Besides the missing text, everything looks legit with my stick.

Dammit; what has sony planned to do about this? This is a serious problem because they are losing business and are responsible for such a product. It is their product and they should be protecting consumers. We might have to start using authenticity numbers. It's not suprising we haven't seen any larger capacities then 2GB, if they were to release a 4gb stick they'd be in extreme short supply and the counterfits would be incredibly mass produced. Sure the sony store or futureshop/best buy is over priced on these things, but I just don't think it's worth the risk to support these mudder flippers halfway across the world screw innocent peeps.

I'm really interested in picking up a 2.0GB Memory Stick Duo Pro from eBay as well. Could somebody post the names/sellers who are selling LEGIT 2.0GB MS Duos?
This would greatly appreciated.

Jan 3rd, 2006 09:48 AM #145I dunno. Its strange it says B.C. Canada but the product is shipped from China. The seller's ratings is good so that's a good sign, but the poor english begs to differ. I guess you'll have to hope for a good one. The price is really low too; 112$. Plus shipping of course but it's still much cheaper than 2 1gb sticks at CC.

Why would a sony memory stick come with a sandisk adapter?
Also as some people have noted, the picture of the packaging shows that the dot method of sealing the package was used.

Jan 3rd, 2006 03:21 PM #149I think sony always ships with a sandisk adapter. That sounds fine to me. But I did notice the 6 point seal. Doh.
