I wouldn't depend on that 'info', as I think that guy got very lucky. If you can do a few weeks here and there, that should be enough.
The exact wording in the collective agreement is:
44.11 Availability and Termination of
Employment
(a) The employment of a temporary employee
may be terminated by the Corporation when
the employee has not worked for any reason
during a period of twelve (12) continuous
months excluding the period from
December 1 to December 24 inclusive.
Following a review of its operational
requirements, should the Corporation decide
to partially exercise its right in this regard,
the identification of the employees who will
be terminated will be by reverse order of
seniority.
(b) The employment of a temporary employee
shall be terminated when the employee has
not demonstrated reasonable availability in
the acceptance of work assignments during
any six (6) consecutive months following the
signing of the collective agreement.

Thanks HJ for posting that.
I think of it more like a bowling league (if anyone herehas been in one).
In bowling the first 4 weeks of a league you set your average by the sheer nature that you haven't played that many games. Then after that when you crap the bed a few games in a row, doesn't really affect your average because the bulk of your games have been played already.
Example. Say you manage to work 25 shifts at CP. Then after that you turn down every other one, or 3rd one, or whatever, it does virtually nothing to your percentage because of what you originally did.
Fredsub, maybe you can add to this using golf terminology?

I was an LC way back in 95 here in Windsor. I worked about half the time. I was on for about 4 months. Twice in a row, or two times in one week I could not come in because I was sick, and was taken off the list. Was this legit or fair? Is there any way after many years I would be able to get my LC job back?
I am still in the system. Recently been emailed for Volume Counter. I am in Windsor.

stupidly I didn't because I had another job- a good job. It's never too late I guess? Anyone ever hear of this? All the supervisor said at the time was I'm taking you off the list.
I honestly am not sure if it was under 90 days or over 90 days. I was there between 3 and 4 months.
I still have my first route on paper that I stashed somewhere.Last edited by vipersrule; Aug 3rd, 2012 at 11:08 PM.

You'd have to dig up the collective agreement from that period, it may very well have been legal to kick you off after 90 days then. Union would have copies. Talk to them, if you're serious.

News out today from the Federal Court of Canada that Guy Dufort was ordered to recuse himself, and for Lisa Raitt to appoint another arbitrator. I am a bit surprised since Dufort was on the approved list (by both parties). Unfortunately, I have to lay blame on this latest delay directly on Dufort himself, he should have stepped aside immediately given that he ran for the Conservatives, and that he was the prosecutor in the pay equity dispute back in 2003. He isn't impartial, and should have recognized that. Lisa Raitt needs to accept fault as well for not selecting an impartial arbitrator.
Federal Court orders new arbitrator for Canada Post labour dispute
Tonda MacCharles
Ottawa Bureau
OTTAWA—A Federal Court judge has turfed the government’s postal dispute arbitrator, saying his background as a past Canada Post pay equity prosecutor and Conservative Party candidate lends a perception of bias.
Justice Danièle Tremblay-Lamer agreed with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers that Guy Dufort should step aside so that the resolution of the labour dispute would be seen as untainted.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt appointed Dufort in June to reach a settlement between the union and Canada Post.
Although the union initially had allowed his name to stand on a list of Quebec arbitrators, it contested his appointment after Dufort advised the parties he’d been a prosecutor for Canada Post during the pay equity dispute from 1998 to 2003 and that he “had been involved with the Conservative Party of Canada until 2010.”
Dufort ran for the Conservatives in the riding of Westmount-Ville Marie in 2008, and in 2000, he ran in Hull-Aylmer for the Progressive Conservative party.
“In light of the unique context of labour relations and the special law (back-to-work legislation tabled by the government), the court concludes that a reasonable and sensible person might worry that the arbitrator is biased because of these two reasons,” said a summary of the court decision issued in French Wednesday.
Tremblay-Lamer ordered Dufort to recuse himself and ordered Raitt to appoint a new arbitrator.
The decision comes as another rebuke to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government which has swiftly moved to cap looming strikes or lockouts by postal, airline and rail workers with the threat of back-to-work legislation, and to order binding arbitration of collective bargaining disputes.
The government repeatedly cites potential damage to what it calls a fragile economic recovery, but its appointments have been decried by unions.
Wednesday’s ruling vindicates the postal union, which claimed Dufort could not give the workers a fair hearing.
Dufort was the second arbitrator named by Raitt, who brought in back-to-work legislation to end Canada Post’s lockout last June.
Coulter Osborne resigned after the union raised concerns that he was not bilingual. The union won a court ruling that the arbitrator should be bilingual.Last edited by Canuck000; Aug 8th, 2012 at 12:45 PM.

I just sent in my fingerprints express post to Ottawa for the Volume Counter job here in WINDSOR (September).
I have read some people say this VC job is for just 2 weeks, others say longer. Anyone know? What are the shifts? Is it a decent way to get your foot in the door as a LC or anything else? thanks!

I sent my security clearance forms by email on July 20th but has since not heard back, have a clean record.
Do they send security clearance forms only to those who they will email for the next step in the process or for a few more candidates as well?
