Random non-Pirate Bay torrent site = don't care
If Rapidshare or Usenet shuts down let us know. These are the only other sharing services with a reach/impact that is comparable to Megaupload.

[Merged] BTjunkie shut down (torrent site)
BTjunkie is not the biggest torrent site out there. In fact, it was ranked number 5 last year.
but how will it affect the landscape following the much publicized closing of Megaupload??
do people here use it?

So far, the people out there providing ways to download free stuff have always been 20 steps ahead of the regulators, and I don't see that changing.
Countless sites have been taken down over the years, but there are always 20 or 30 substitutes already running by that point. The shutdown of megavideo has done nothing to change my viewing habits online.
The only thing that will really change the landscape is if they really start going after the average person downloading this stuff. If I feel there is a credible threat to me if I download this stuff, I might think twice. Right now, it is just on to the next site.

Going after people who download content would bring us closer to a police state. The only true way would be for content to go digital. Why buy DVDs when you could download them online through some app similar to itunes for cheaper. Im surprised that no one has nothing but music piracy has gone way down since music started selling digitally online.

Question, my understanding from talking with other LEO's was that downloading was legal in Canada but uploading isn't; is that not the case?

I think you are correct.
Even in the US today I think they are going after the facilitators of piracy and not average joe downloaders
I think the music industry suffered a major PR black eye by suing regular folks for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A virus for sure? Not if you're not a total moron. I've downloaded scads of stuff other than media files from Usenet without a problem. There are tons of usenet indexers that have rating systems and comments. The one I use is indistinguishable from most torrent sites, it just uses the newsreader instead of a torrent utility.
