Apparently voluntarily.

2005 - 2012
This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on. It's been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!

Happened a few days ago... I noticed the minute it went down because BTJ was my preferred torrent search site. Just felt so old school ya know?

For me, moot. I have seldom used torrents in the past 5 years. Used to use Isohunt when I did. Now with all the tracking, not using torrents at all...

Surely you've heard about Harper's current legislation that will allow exactly that to occur? There will be no privacy expectation on the internet once that passes. There will only be more profits for Bhell and Robbers along with John Law prying into your personal affairs with impunity.
I suppose people just don't bother expressing their opinion on this to their elected representatives? Or just don't care? If you think your voice doesn't count then you're right.

for people using usenet, is it normal to grab asdf.zip and have it link to a site that requires you sign up to unlock the zip?

I'm sure not many people used this site but megaups.com vanished a couple months back as well.

I personally like all the passworded rars in rars on usenet. It weeds out the noobs, keeps usenet somewhat exclusive. With that said top private trackers like SCC and FTN still dominate usenet for pre times and even speed I would say. Both will easily cap anyone's home connection however.
