While I agree that the buyers were obviously not the smartest individuals involved (especially the ones that bought vouchers after it was obvious that The Butchers were making their rounds on all the deal sites they could), I think it's a little inaccurate to put them in the same ballpark of gluttony as the butchers and the deal sites.
The Butchers - made tens of thousands of dollars based on lies and deceit.
The deal sites - also made tens of thousands of dollars acting as an accomplice for the butchers to carry out their fraudulent activities.
The buyers - Lost $50-100 per voucher hoping to get premium overpriced meat at a steep discount because they trusted the deal sites.
The buyers, while obviously naive and unrealistic, are the victims here. End of story._______________

@ kator
You spoke well within the context of the program which seemed to be a generalization of the group deal industry. In retrospect, by no fault of yours, one could have gotten the impression that Marlon's issues were momentary and subsequently resolved. I think that even a full hour on just The Butchers fiasco would not be enough to adequately cover the issues.
Your zinger on the 'unfortunate' choice of names for the re-branded business was classic. The interviewer seemed to get it but I think it may have slipped by the general audience. Hint to those not getting it, think of a typical name of a 70's porno movie.
If it was I who misread that, please let me know and I will wash my brain out with soap.

I found it here
http://www.cbc.ca/ontariotoday/2012/...group-coupons/
Those guys in Ottawa sound even more ******** than Marlon. They actually admitted they were broke and that it was a 'get rich quick scheme'
Who admits that they wilfully were scamming. lolLast edited by Love2Snack; Feb 3rd, 2012 at 08:51 PM.

This quote made me laugh.
Interviewer: How many of these things are there, these social media sites?
Ryerson prof: In Toronto, there's a whole bunch, there's at least ten.
Also, p!ssing me off, the woman who just gave up on the deal where she got burned and can't be bothered to go after Groupon for it. Nice way to reward the scammy vendor and the scammy deal site.Last edited by ronin1701; Feb 3rd, 2012 at 09:23 PM.

@ Love2Snack
Yes, I found it refreshing to have the kid inadvertently admit to it being a ponzi scheme or more accurately in their case a Hail Mary pass. Of course a higher up can always say the kid didn't know what he was talking about but the kid's purpose to fit the sympathy bill went well " we love the store and don't want it to close (repeat 3X)" He was the owner's kevlar vest. The kid reminded me of the pimply faced employee always shown on Family Guy.
I would say that Aubrey's and The Butchers have effectively killed the group coupon potential for any quality meat establishment. This is a good thing. These group deals simply CANNOT work under certain circumstances. Offering a coupon for a one off restaurant meal or to fill a half-full dance class when overheads are already accounted for is good business.
Offering high quality food, which everyone knows costs substantially more in general for an 80+% vendor loss and then doing it 6-7 times in succession is pre-meditated fraud. It would seem in these cases that Marlon is the Master, and Aubrey "grasshopper". I wouldn't be surprised if they even had a conversation, Aubrey to get information and learn the tricks and Marlon to deflect some bad press.
The second lesson is that MOST of these coupon dealers are whores. They will take the money. No questions asked. The chap on the radio who worked for one of them admitted that he is on 100% commission. Would he tell Marlon not to do the 5th, 6th ,7th deal if he makes $1,000 on each. Not likely. Would the deal company walk knowing full well that one of their many sprouting competitors would snap it up and make 50% for doing next to nothing? No likely either.
Of course that is a moot point because by his own account, Marlon was making serial mistakes until he woke up too late and then was contractually committed ( play sit-com laugh track). If it wasn't for the alt- media Marlon would be on his 75th deal ( $4000 worth of organic meat for $999), and Roseman and O'shea would be lobbying on behalf of him for the Order of Canada for feeding people quality meats during tough times.
The third lesson I suppose would be to stick with the larger coupon companies that have the resources and a verifiable history of refunding people when they get 'Butchered'.
This would have a self correcting effect in that they would go after the deal breaker to recoup their losses. It seems the biggest mistake Aubrey's made was to include the flagship outfit. This will ensure their bankruptcy.
So, lessons learned all around.......

They will give you your money back if you persist. Demand to speak to peter the manager. He and others will try to give you the royal run around. I threatened to sue. They just gave me money back last week. Even that was a hassle as they claimed they processed it but there was not money in their paypal account.
Do not let these guys rip you off.
be persistent. threaten to sue and you too will get your hard earned cash back.
