Used the machine today. Got a $135 and didn't have any hassle from the CSR.

I just went to the machine in the bank on Royal York just north of Eglinton (1440 Royal York Rd.)
Put in my money, it came up to about $75. I grabbed the handful of change that was in the coin return and counted it at $1.44 then put it back in.
It came up as $1.19. Brought it up to the teller but she didn't seem to care or do anything about it. I should have been pissed but at least I've got some money in my hands instead of a pile of pennies and nickels.
If you used the coin star at the grocery store you'd probably get miscounted, and then they deduct an extra 12% on top.

I went to this location yesterday to redeem 4364 pennies
I was in there around noon and nobody was using the penny arcade. It took me about 15 minutes because I had the pennies rolled up so I had to unroll each roll. Luckily, my amount was never miscounted. I enjoyed the whole experience thoroughly. I like to drop small coins into vending machines so hearing the coins clinking inside the machine made me happy. When I was done and in line to redeem my money a man came in with two medium sized jars filled with pennies lol
I hope this service stays free for good.

Hi Everyone....A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS!

I know this is an OLD thread, but wanted to ask if we could update this thread for 2012
I want to take my Pennies in.....
I know some Loblaws have coin-machines, but read somewhere they are 'Coinstar' machines and
that they charge a percentage to use them....
My question...can we UPDATE this thread. Please post other change machines and updated TD Machines.
Thanks again!

Coinstar is pretty well known in the US. I heard you can find them at Walmarts where the machine is free to use but they give you Walmart Gift cards for your change....Win for you (free coin counting) and win for Walmart who gives get's customers to spend their gift cards.
I'd be happy to see them here as gift cards are OK (at the right vendors eg. Loblaws, Walmart, Costco etc.)_______________
We're all bozos on the bus until we find a way to express ourselves...
Failure is always an option...just not the preferred one!

BMO has no-fee coin counting machines in select locations.
I don't know if this was posted before, I haven't read every page, but according to BMO's website they have no fee coin machines in select locations.
"Coin Counter
The BMO Coin Counter is an easy-to-use self-service kiosk that quickly counts loose coin for both BMO and non-BMO personal customers. This is a free service offered in select locations."
The search function to find locations with the machines brings up all locations so I suggest contacting BMO by phone to confirm where the closest location to you is. Time to get rid of all the pennies.....

Thus far it looks like The Bank of Montreal AND the TD Bank offering FREE coin sorting machines.....
FOUND this below:
Press Releases
Say Goodbye to the Penny: Make it Count at BMO
WDM Group PR Network 29 Mar 2012 WDM Group PR Network
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 29, 2012) - As announced in the Federal Budget, after 150 years production on the Canadian penny will be officially phased out beginning this fall. However, Canadians can still make their pennies count before then.
BMO's coin counters, rolled out last year, are available for free to all Canadians, and are an ideal solution for Canadians looking to get rid of their loose change.
"Canadians put into practice a number of techniques to save money, including collecting and storing their loose change - a significant portion of which is likely made up of pennies," said Paul Dilda, Head of North American Branch Channel, BMO Bank of Montreal. "BMO's free coin counters are a convenient way for Canadians to cash-in on their pennies."
BMO coin counters are able to count Canadian coins at a rate of up to 4,000 per minute. The counters generate a receipt for the total, which can be exchanged at the branch for cash or deposited into a BMO bank account.
One year after BMO rolled out its free coin counting machines in new and select remodelled branches, Canadians have deposited more than 54 million coins, totalling more than $7 million in loose change.
Furthermore, the free service has resulted in upwards of $880,000 in savings for Canadians, as transaction fees for similar services can run above 9 per cent of the total amount of money deposited.
So far, BMO has rolled out 52 coin counting machines in branches located in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
For more information, please visit www.bmo.com and to find a BMO coin counter near you, please visit https://locator.bmo.com.

They're just going to stop minting pennies in the fall. The coins will retain their value forever (at least at banks), so you don't have to rush to the bank right away to deposit them.
Actually, if they'd had coin exchange machines in banks before, the penny probably wouldn't have been axed, since the main problem with them is the expense of minting another billion each year to replace the ones people hoard in jars. If the coins stayed in circulation they'd last for ages.

Thanks for reviving this thread.
I was about to head down to one of those coin start machines that charge 10/15% ... argg ...
To find a location go here:
http://locator.bmo.com/
1) Select Advanced Search
2) Enter postal code / address.
3) Select Coin Counter check box.
Search!
You don't need to have a BMO account, at least that's what I was told, you can get cash back.
The search can be a little funky, so if you're seeing hundreds of branches try reloading the page again, there aren't that many with coin counters.
To confirm, click on the branch in the map and go to the Services tab and look for Coin Counter.Last edited by taal; Apr 13th, 2012 at 11:32 AM.
