you can't jailbreak the atv3 yet.. so this thing is useless for most people till it comes out.

I don't think there is a jailbreak from the 3rd gen out yet just for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

I have a gen2 and have not had much luck jailbreaking it, with this deal I am thinking of selling it to someone who would be interested in the jailbreak and buying this model for the 1080p capability.

ATV3 Can't be jailbroken yet. But it may be coming in the next few months. Without a jailbreak, this device is useless. But good deal if you buy it and wait for the jailbreak then sell it. You'll have doubled the price!

I have a jailbroken ATV2 and an unjailbroken ATV3 for different rooms - the combination of AirVideo serving up video from the server + AirPlay serving content to the ATV3 makes it just as useful as XBMC on the ATV2 - and requires very little technical expertise.

I use my ATV3 to airplay all content from my mac....if you have a newer mac then no need to jailbreak...I stream all kinds of video content online (sports/movies/shows) from my mac to my atv......If you want HD quality then this may not be for you....but if you are happy with VHS like video quality then it works great IME.

you can also use VLC streamer to airplay files from your server to the atv3...works well.

AirVideo (a 3$ iOS app) live transcodes most formats I've thrown at it and serves to the AppleTV via AirPlay. There's other app alternatives like GoodPlayer, but AirVideo backgrounds well. If you need a non-iOS solution, Macs can AirPlay natively via Mountain Lion, Windows iTunes can AirPlay things which have transcoded through Handbrake from the library (although the AppleTV will read your iTunes library anyways :/), and AirParrot / Reflections (I haven't used these personally) mirror your Windows desktop to your set top box via AirPlay.
