Ahh, I see what you're saying. AFAIK, the Apple TV requires the Airplayed content to originate from an Apple device, so an Android/PC wouldn't be able to send the content to the ATV, right?
I'd love to be able to grab a couple of these for my parents. They can't download anything without installing a couple million toolbars along with it. I was gonna set up XBMC on their laptops but I have a feeling that they'd managed to mess it up. I see ATV2's going for 250+ on Craigslist. Do people actually pay a 150% markup for someone to install XBMC on their ATVs??!?Last edited by Deafmented; Dec 12th, 2012 at 01:39 PM.

Try AirParrot (http://airparrot.com/)
AirParrot allows mirroring from MacBooks for ones older that don't have the native Apple mirroring. If used with ATV3 it pretty much does what jailbroken ATV2 with XBMC would.
If you just want a box to bring internet connectivity to your TV to stream then a Roku is cheaper and more flexible. You can hardwire (which if you plan to transcode 1080p stuff is almost a requirement) as well as connect an external HD via USB.
I don't have either. I just use Universal (PS3) Media Server and my MacBook Air to serve and transcode to my TV (one has the PS3 attached, the other is a Bravia with a LAN port).Last edited by samj1; Dec 12th, 2012 at 01:39 PM.

I've been using my ATV3 for a few months now and LOVE the little square box.
I primarily use for three things- music, video and pictures.
Music/Pictures - I own a MacbookPro (09) so Airplay works fine here. I use Itunes and it works just as advertised.
Video- is where most interest is. I generally use my ATV3 for video 70% of the time. Of that 80% is streaming HD video, 10%non-HD and the occasional Youtube/Netflix (both apps built-in).
Now for video, since there's no jailbreak available, u have two options, either convert to .mp4 or stream using Airplay (since I have a relatively-older Mac, Airplay does not work optimally)
To solve that is Beamer, a $15 dollar app. It simply transcodes files and streams them over. I've had it since a wk of owning my ATV3 and I've not seen the need for the jailbreak. Great support, constant updates and very reliable. 1080 streams and extensive file support.
I also own a license to AirParrot and rarely use it. Not worth 10$ IMO as its buggy and slow. Just my two cents, they do have a trial.
To stream from my Android, I use AppleTvMedia. Although its buggy and slows down my Nexus too, it works as advertised. Ur gonna need some patience nonetheless!

I've seen those too, but keep in mind the prices are already inflated due to unavailability. When I bought mine, it was priced at $80, but it was priced that way because the seller was a guy who did nothing but view iTunes content, so not jailbroken - he didn't know anything about it). I ended up paying $150 for it, but having seen most of the ads at $200+, thought it was still worth it. Jailbreaking is a painless process, definitely not worth paying $50 extra for.
