I have rogers extreme internet and don't have any voice issues while downloading torrents, when rogers claimed they increased there DL speed I switched to express and had nothing but problems even just surfing the net would give me choppy voice quality so I switched back to extreme and everything is good again.

Ok ! Are you using any kind of QoS settings ? It works fine on my side when i limit the grabit bandwidth allocation.
Another issue i'm having is that the party i'm calling is having his own voice echo'ed, quite often. I'm wondering if a setting in the pap2t or the spa942 that's causing this. Maybe i'll buy a Snom or some other brand of voip hardware to test if it works better...
Thanks.

i havent checked or changed any QoS settings on the router.. gonna try today when i have a few minutes. hey, within grabit itself, you are able to limit the bandwidth or max speed for downloads?
i've never run into issues with echoing at all.. i just have default settings right now on tomato and the pap2t. i've used pap2t in a number of places for people and havent had any issues.

None, I am using this service for few days with the $50 configuration, pretty impressive so far. Try to look through the forum from the website http://forum.freephoneline.ca/ and try to find the sweet spot for your specific VOIP adapter with a little bit of tweaking, you should be fine.

You can configure any (unlocked) SIP device with the settings you get.

I have no problems with local calls, but long distance calls have quality problems more often than not. Specifically, even though the other side can hear me fine, their voice comes in choppy and unintelligible. So much so, that I have to redial, sometimes several times until I get a good connection. I can tell whether the connection is ok by the sound of the ringing tone, even before the other party picks up. This is very annoying. To be fair, I have not had time to dig around in my router's QOS settings, since I first set it up a few months ago. However, I find it unlikely that this is what the problem is seeing as local calls are just fine.

Initial investment-$50 potential return-$100s maybe $1000s
I've searched through many forums including the ones on dslreports.com
More people have said they were satified than not, but it might have to do with hardware or qos settings.
I picked up a Seedtouch 780wl for $20 and if all is well I'll stack my modems, say bye to Bell, put the savings towards a second dsl line with mlppp and end up with 10 mbps download speed, 400GB download limit and my existing phones plugged into the router.
Teksavvy good...Bell and Rogers bad!

Absolutely... with any VOIP you have to have a clean data line. Lost packets means voice breakup or voice delays since the data either gets lost or has to be resent.
I've been using VOIP for about five years now and when I first got on I had a lot of problems. And the providers weren't much help. The VOIP company blamed my ISP, and my ISP blamed the VOIP company. After trying many different possible solutions I eventually replaced my cable line with RG6 cable (satellite quality) and wow... everything worked great. I'm on cable internet and it was the lousy cable line that gave me lousy voice quality.
I now have three VOIP lines running at home with 3Web as my ISP and they all work great. In fact, one of the Freephone VOIP lines runs off my Netgear 104 Powerline adapter and I get Bell landline quality. The main internet line is in the basement and the Powerline signal transmits between three floors to my 3rd floor office with no problems at all.
For those that need to test their ISP line try:
http://speedtest.net/
A clean line (no lost packets) equals a good VOIP experience. After all, G711u uses approximately 128kb/s of bandwidth and G729a uses approximately 16kb/s. So technically, you can VOIP successfully using a telephone modem connection if you set your adapter to G729a - which is what Freephoneline recommends you use.

I had the same issue with G729a, try using G711u setting if you have a good broadband connection. Every thing works great with G711u. However, you will need to configure your QoS on G711u otherwise it will attempt to use too much of your bandwidth and if you are downloading other stuff simultaneously then you can potentially run into troubble if no preference is given to VOIP.

Well it depends, for me it is a steal. I was paying bell basic + caller ID + voice mail + call waiting and the monthly bill was running into $ 45. So with the free voip and even paying the $ 8 dry loop fees, I am saving quite a bit and with the added advantage of calling long distance to many Canadian Cities and that I no longer have to pay the suckers $50 every time I move and now can keep my number any where I go!
