Avatar is set to fall as the highest grossing movie ever when this releases...
Wonder if it will have a PG or G rating?

it will be a complete fail with a G rating unless they plan to kiddie/toddler it which would be illogical based on the previous movies which had heads severed and many action scenes of significant violence.
I would consider the other movies a hard PG as it went beyond just frightening scenes and am extremely hopeful this would not get dumbed down compared to the previous movies.

Not as excited as I might once have been.
The more modern fantasy series I read the more this reminds me of an 84 Caravan, a ground breaking landmark product that spawned an entire market segment - but I have no desire to drive one.
Erickson, Rothfuss, Lynch, Martin etc. are increasing expectations of fans of the genre and HBO is setting a standard with Game of Thrones I suspect will leave a vacuum where fare like the Hobbit will suffer by comparison.
Not that it will be badly done but like the recent Conan movie, competent actors, fantastic sets, a large budget and sound production don't make a good movie if the underlying story is tired. All I could think as I watched it was how misguided studios are to think this kind of story works anymore._______________

Illogical? Dumbed down?
The Hobbit is a children's book.

The LOTR movies were all rated 14A in Ontario (Adult Accompaniment if under 14) and PG-13 in the States. It'll be interesting to see if PJ matches the violence factor of The Hobbit movies to meet the trilogy or if he'll keep it more toned down like the Narnia or Harry Potter movies.

It's Official - "The Hobbit" movie adaptation is now a trilogy

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'
We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.
So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.
It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."
Cheers,
Peter J_______________

Finally finished reading the Hobbit, and here are my thoughts on how the movies will work (spoiler alert for those who have not read the book):
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey:
- Basically covers Chapter 1-6
- Begins in Hobbiton
- Introduce Bilbo, Gandalf, and the Dwarves
- Goes into some of the Dwarf history found in the Appendix
- Goes into more detail about the meeting between Gandalf and Thorin (from Appendix I believe)
- Trolls
- Misty Mountain Adventures with Goblins and Golumn and the Ring
- Battle with the Wargs
- Eagles come and rescue the party
- I think the ending will be when the eagles fly the party to safety and part ways. Closing show will be the party heading off to Mirkwood
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
- Begins with the meeting with Beorn
- Gandalf part ways with the party.
- Spiders and escape from the Wood-elves
- Introduction of Lake-town
- Party goes up to the Lonely Mountain and enters into Smaug's lair
- Movie will end with Smaug closing off the secret door and heading off to Lake-town. An immense battle ensues where Smaug gets killed by the Bard; think the Battle of Helms Deep at the end of Two Towers.
- Last scene is the Master of Lake-Town blaming the dwarves for the dragon's attack. Shot then changes to the dwarves first entering the treasure chamber, with an uneasy Biblo
The Hobbit: There and Back again.
- First scene will be the story of Gandalf and the Necromencer (side story similar to the opening of Return of the King with the backstory of Golum)
- Shows the story of the death of Smaug being spread across the elves and the Goblins. Everyone begins to mobilize their army
- Conflict between the Dwarves and Men/Elves
- Bilbo's betrayal
- Goblins and Wargs attack
- Battle of the Five Armies
- Bilbo's journey home
- Connection to LOTR
