[Merged] OpenOffice: Free Productivity Suite
This is an free equivalent to Microsoft Office, fully featured. Most of the best programs used by every day use are mostly free these days, this is no exception.

Can it read microsoft office 2007 programs and vice versa - readable by those to whom I send it?

As long as you save them as .doc instead of .odt your files can be opened by MS Office users. You can open MS Office files.
Personally I hate Java programs so I don't use it >.>; All I ever really use is Word anyway. Use Adobe Illustrator to make up presentation files as my profs have threatened to bring untold pain to us if we use PowerPoint =(
