Was tempted to give a "why?" honk but decided it's not worth getting shot or brake checked.

QC has just officially (after being a pilot project for some years) adopted the "Courtesy green light for volunteer firefighters", coming into effect soon. But, I'm not overly optimestic about asking "courtesy" from drivers when we see things like this all the time:

Shouldn't you be giving them a bit more room though? lol...
Isn't it general that you can't drive behind emergency vehicles with lights activated with no less than 500ft or 150m in between? You're within 1-2 car lengths.

Was behind this BMW X6 for a long time the other morning. What struck me is that I never ever saw exhaust coming from the right exhaust outlet. I can't believe that this is not a true dual exhaust so what's going on here. Idling or accelerating, there was no difference.

There’s a butterfly valve that opens/closes to switch between single/dual exhaust. I don’t know all the parameters but I think it only opens on aggressive acceleration or running in sport mode. Driving leisurely it’s in single exhaust mode for efficiency and reduced noise. Stomp on it in sport mode and it opens up to dual exhaust mode and it gets louder.CaptSmethwick wrote: ↑ Was behind this BMW X6 for a long time the other morning. It turns out that BMW designs the system to only pump exhaust out the driver's side. Under WOT, a valve opens and some exhaust is diverted out the exhaust on the passenger side.

Audi,BMW, and other have been using actuators to open and close the second exhaust outlet for many years. nothing new here.CanadianLurker wrote: ↑ There’s a butterfly valve that opens/closes to switch between single/dual exhaust. Funny I just noticed it the other day. And here I thought I was pretty observant about vehicles. Learn something new all the time!

I have to say, in the coldest days of winter here, it looks goofy - as if it is a fake dual exhaust.

some are really fake like one exhaust line to the back and splits into a Y is more definition of fake. The real dual exhausts have two lines usually 6 cylinders and up if I am not mistaken.CaptSmethwick wrote: ↑ I have to say, in the coldest days of winter here, it looks goofy - as if it is a fake dual exhaust.

My old CTS is a V6 with real dual exhaust but I've seen CX-5s with vapour coming out of both exhausts. Given those are 4-bangers, they are undoubtedly on a single pipe but just well-balanced enough to come out of both sides.
