I have an external and it works well, but its 100% plugged into my PS3. To transfer files I just have a long usb extension (extension into an extension into an extension :-) to transfer files. I used to unplug the power and then move it all the time, but snaking the cable behind the tv stand etc got to be a pain. They do have their place (I have 2) but a portable one is just that, portable and has its own niche in the computer world

In case no one answer your question.
Element is a bare drive, no special software which maybe a good thing. All Element use mini USB.
Passport has proprietary software, basically it uses virtual driver to create another drive for "advanced" features like hardware encryption, backup, sync... Some passports come with micro USB port.

You are still on this???
Please post the last time I bragged in a post. MY contest post was closed almost 2 years ago. And if thats the case maybe you better talk to all the people that post in the Contest thread about stuff they won.
None of this would of even come to being if you didnt add you little PS after the fact I pointed out these arent even the same type of hard drives.
So if someone cued drama first, it was you. Why add that after the fact when I pointed out your mistake_______________

Someone needs to get out of this thread. The OP is obviously correct.
The alternative 3TB deal is barely a descent deal at $109. I purchased the same Seagate 3TB for $99.99, and it was recently as low as $89.99.
On the other hand, I have not seen the 1TB passport for any less.

Might be even better savings if you take the actual flyer or web printout and PM at Best Buy and Future Shop to get 10% of the difference. It's not much, but if you are worried about stock levels at Staples this may be another alternative. If it's on their flyer I don't think they have any reason to deny your PM with Staples. Seems like both Best Buy and Future Shop are selling this for 99.99.

I believe this is the time I purchased for $99.99. It was free shipping.
It's been on sale quite a few times for <$100
I can't find anything for $89.99, so I could be wrong; but I do remember reading it in another thread.

Pretty good deal for this unit. Prices look like they're starting to drop for these portable drives again, so this might be a regular sale price soon as in someone will have it on sale every week.
Can't compare a 2.5" drive to a 3.5" drive. Generally, IMO, the portable drives are less reliable than the desktop ones, but portability makes a huge difference. I would like to see someone carry around a massive desktop drive instead of a portable drive every day to/from work or school and searching for a plug everywhere they go, plus cables galore.
